Membership Information American Association of General Hospital Psychiatrists History The AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF GENERAL HOSPITAL PSYCHIATRISTS was founded in 1978 in recognition of psychiatry’s established and growing presence in a broad spectrum of services provided in general hospital settings. Further organizational development has been fostered by the process of “deinstitutionalization,” the “remedicalization” of psychiatry, the growth of consultation-liaison activities with other medical specialties, as well as the emergence of new financial and health care delivery challenges. The organization has always promoted professional interests, advancement of knowledge, and enhancement of communication among general hospital psychiatrists.

Mission Statement The general hospital sector is the largest provider of psychiatric care in the U.S., offering a broad array of services, including Emergency, Inpatient, Medical-Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison, Substance Abuse, and Outpatient programs. The role of psychiatry in the general hospital has become complicated by the development of multisitemultisystem health and mental health delivery organizations. At the same time, increasing knowledge in and increasing re-integration of medicine and psychiatry create a unique role for the general hospital psychiatrist.
