Ionics awarded two water treatment contracts Ionies h a s b e e n a w a r d e d a w a s t e w a t e r s y s t e m contract, v a l u e d at $2.3 million, b y the US city of Chandler, Arizona, a n d h a s received a multimillion dollar order from Ralph M P a r s o n s C o m p a n y of P a s a d e n a , to d e s i g n a n d s u p p l y a boiler water t r e a t m e n t s y s t e m for the Shell Oil Refinery in Martlnez, California. The c o m p a n y is to s u p p l y a reverse o s m o s i s p l a n t t h a t will be u s e d to reclaim water d i s c h a r g e d by a billion dollar m a n u f a c t u r i n g p l a n t now u n d e r c o n s t r u c t i o n in C h a n d l e r for the s e m i c o n d u c t o r giant, Intel. The p l a n t will t r e a t over 7000 I / m i n of w a s t e w a t e r to d r i n k i n g water s t a n d a r d s prior to injecting it into a n aquifer. The p l a n t is s c h e d u l e d to be c o m p l e t e d by 1 March 1996. Ionics' water s y s t e m s are key e l e m e n t s in the utilities section in Shell's $1 billion Clean Fuels P r o g r a m m e at the c o m p a n y ' s Martinez refinery. The water t r e a t m e n t p a c k a g e wiU include a 4548 I / m i n , two-stage reverse o s m o s i s s y s t e m with p r e s s u r e m e d i a filtration a n d s o d i u m zeolite softening p r e t r e a t m e n t , a n d a 4548 I / m i n c o n d e n s a t e p o l i s h i n g s y s t e m b a s e d on s o d l u m - f o r m cation exchange. Shell Oil C o m p a n y ' s Clean Fuel P r o g r a m m e involves modification of its Martinez m a n u f a c t u r i n g complex to p r o d u c e cleaner b u r n i n g r e f o r m u l a t e d gasoline as r e q u i r e d b y state a n d federal laws. These modifications will also enable the refinery to meet the

federal a n d s t a t e clean air r e q u i r e m e n t s . The project will not i n c r e a s e the t h r o u g h p u t of the c r u d e oil, says the company, b u t r a t h e r will allow the refinery to p r o c e s s c r u d e m o r e efficiently a n d to convert heavy fuel oils into cleaner p r o d u c t s s u c h a s gasoline, a n d Jet a n d diesel fuels. The clean fuels project i n c l u d e s s u b s t a n t i a l recycling a n d w a s t e r e d u c t i o n a n d is d e s i g n e d to minimize water u s e t h r o u g h air cooling and, ff n e c e s s a r y , the u s e of r e c l a i m e d water. Membrane expedites well bore measurements W h a t is claimed to be a u n i q u e well liner h a s b e e n developed to expedite a v a r i e t y of borehole m e a s u r e m e n t s safely while m a i n t a i n i n g well bore stability. The liner u s e s a t u b u l a r m e m b r a n e a t t a c h e d to a t e t h e r to deploy s e n s o r s or s a m p l i n g devices in b o r e h o l e s for s u b - s u r f a c e monitoring. Positive p r e s s u r e is s u p p l i e d to m a i n t a i n borehole integrity once the liner is positioned. The tether c a n be r e p l a c e d by a n electronic cable, which can tow a logging tool t h r o u g h the borehole to m a p s a t u r a t i o n profiles, for example. The m e m b r a n e c a n also be c u s t o m - d e s i g n e d to facilitate gas permeability measurement. From a holding c a n i s t e r the s y n t h e t i c film m e m b r a n e is p o s i t i o n e d w i t h i n the borehole u s i n g air p r e s s u r e . The design e l i m i n a t e s a n y dragging of i n s t r u m e n t s along the borehole wail a n d e n s u r e s t h a t the only c o n t a c t t h a t is m a d e is with t h a t section of wall defined b y the operator. C o m m e r c i a l a p p l i c a t i o n s to date have b e e n relegated to m a p p i n g g r o u n d - w a t e r contaminants. The project is f u n d e d b y the US D e p a r t m e n t of Energy, Office of Technology Development t h r o u g h S a n d i a National Laboratories.
