However, as a reviewer, I imn@iatcly reacte& to .yet another book oh membrane proteins. .The an&em. to my ~questionsare actually q&reassuring in this case. Let me start by saying that this book is a laboratory .m&nutl based on the International Advanced Course on Membrane Proteins organized by -FEBS and the Swiss Commission on Molecular Biology in Berne, 1980. The course dealt primarily with the techniques for h~&dling membrane-bound enzymes and that is the emphasis of the book. This -is obvious1y.a strength for. those wishing to learn about the isolation of specific proteins (e.g. phosphohpase A,, acetylcholine receptor, acetylcholine e&erase; cytochiome c oxidase,.etc.), but the individual protocols may not be very useful for other proteins. The saxtiemay be said of the experiments on reconstitution, w&S include the jt&ylcholine receptor, mitdchondrial ADP/_ATP carrier protein, purple’membrane, ubiquinone reductase and redcell membrane band 3. The section on analytical techniques (e.g. electrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis, thin-layer chromatography, etc.),~~‘moregenerally applicable and potentially more useful. This isalso true of .the prottilson membrane modification methods (hydrophobic and hydrophilic labeling; cros+king laheling);.spectral. techniques (spin labels; fluorescencespectioscopy, potentiomeij &ith’dyes, circular -dichroism) .and other .physical methods (monoiayer &u&s, capacitance -measurement,eiectron microscopy). The variety~‘ofm&hods listedindi&zs. that. the.editors have cove&l a very wide range of: ihk. techniques being used today -‘in~re&Grch~ on ~membratieproteins.
