The first part, "Incarceration and Punitiveness Revisited,'" has as its main theme the ineffectiveness of incarceration as a deterrent to crime. Part 2, "Trends in the Treatment of Juvenile Delinquents," is a short synopsis of the primary characteristics of the new treatment programs. Part 3, " N o n - I n s t i t u t i o n a l Treatment of Delinquents: Experiments and Their Aftermath," co~ers the California experience with differential treatment in the community. The fourth part, -Small Scale Treatment Environments: The G r o u p Home," contains discussions of twelve different programs throughout the country. Citing as a deficiency in previous studies of prison life that only a selective sample of inmates was interviewed, the author of this book has responded by interviewing all the inmates ot a women's prison and s u p p l e m e n t i n g this information with institutional records. T h e author, now chairman ot the Department of Social Science at Edgewood College, based this book on her research at the District ot Columbia Women's Reformatory at Occoquan, Virginia. The book comprises ten chapters: "The Prison: Inside and Outside"; "The Square, the Cool, and the Life"; ?The Prison Setting: The Official World"; " '~Laking Out': initiation to the fnmate World"; " 'The Family': Adaptive Social Structures"; " 'Doing T i m e ' : The Polity and Pattern Maintenance"; " 'Mind Your Business': Integration and Pattern Maintenance"; "Keeping Busy: T e n s i o n Management and Integration"; " ' D o n ' t Take N o t h i n g Off Nobody': Status and Power"; and "The Prison World: Inmates and Staff." This study investigates a sample of 423 men released from Canadian prisons, concentrating on factors which influence their reintegration into society and the probabilities of their rearrest. Based on individual interviews with the men before they were released, a n d periodically for twenty-four months afterward, the study also compares experiences of parolees with those of men released without parole in order to test the effectiveness of parole supervision. Topics discussed in the twelve chapters include: the correctional effectiveness of prison and parole, the Canadian discharge system, study methodology, the men studied, their experiences in the penitentiary and on release, o b t a i n i n g jobs, effects on family, parole, recidivism, prediction of arrest. study findings, and alternatives to the present system. Numerous tables are included, and appendixes comprise intormation on parole, the Canadian penitentiary system, study variables, and prediction equations. The book also contains a glossary and bibliography.
