Book Reviews
Mayo Clin Proc, January 2000, Vol 75
Scope of Book: This text is comprehensive in its systematic review of normal female anatomy and associated pathologic conditions of the breast and pelvic organs as delineated through various imaging modalities. Contents: The book consists of 47 chapters divided into 4 sections. The initial section covers basic physics and practical techniques commonly used to image the female reproductive organs. The second section reviews imaging of normal female pelvic anatomy by each modality. The next, and largest, section of the book contains numerous chapters dedicated to a wide spectrum of gynecologic disorders, organized both by organ of origin and by individual modality . The last section is devoted to breast imaging and intervention, in keeping with the concept of "women's imaging." Most chapters are liberally illustrated with imaging examples of female pelvic and breast pathology. Strengths: The obvious strength of this text is its up-to-date coverage of a growing area of imaging subspecialization and expertise that has developed in response to heightened awareness about women's health issues. Its organization and content should promote an integrated and more unified multimodality perspective on the diagnosis and delineation of various gynecologic disorders. The numerous illustrations that complement the text are useful for visually oriented physicians. Deficiencies: Because of the comprehensive nature of the text, certain disease processes and methods of imaging are unavoidably presented in considerably less detail than would be found in a more focused book. Recommended Readership: This timely book would be a valuable addition to the libraries of radiologists, gynecologists, and medical students. Overall Grading:

Herbal Therapy, Medicinal Plants, and Natural Products: An IPA Compilation, edited by Dwight R. Tousignaut, 167 pp, $62.50, 7272 Wisconsin Ave, Bethesda, MD 20814, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (telephone: 301-6573000), 1999, ISBN 0-879907-6
Type ofBook: A potpourri of abstracts, primarily from the alternative medicine literature, obtained from the International Pharmaceutical Abstracts database. Scope of Book: This text addresses a broad range of topics, including medicinal plants, other natural products, naturopathy, aromatherapy, Ayurveda, folk medicine, and a few traditional topics. Contents: The abstracts, selected in an unspecified manner from a database encompassing the past 30 years, are divided into 2 main groupings and arranged in chronological order. The first section, entitled "Use in Patients," covers research from bench to bedside, and the second, "Additional References," contains abstracts related primarily to subject reviews. Because the abstracts are not grouped by subject or author, the book has separate subject and author indexes. The book contains 736 abstracts, an extraordinar-

ily small percentage of the available literature in this genre. How they were selected is most bewildering--one might suspect that seminal articles, first reports, or largest series would take precedence, but this does not seem to be the case. For example, "Chinese herb nephropathy" is represented by a letter to the editor responding to a previous major publication that is not listed in the abstracts. Unfortunately, an abstract describing malignant degeneration in a kidney with Chinese herb nephropathy is included in the book but not listed in the subject index. Strengths: Presumably, the strength of the text is the depth of the database, and readers are referred to a website for additional information. Another strength might be the listing of little known articles from obscure journals. However, readers may be compelled to conclude that there is a reason articles are published in unfrequented literature. For example, abstract No. 082, "Ginseng-Root Just Like a Carrot," is unlikely to become the definitive treatise on either ginseng or carrots. Deficiencies: This book does not really have a readership. There are far too few abstracts to make it a reference source, and there are not enough abstracts on any given topic to make it a suitable monograph. It is clearly not meant for browsing or light reading. Recommended Readership: That is the problem. Overall Grading:

Menopause: Endocrinology and Management, edited by David B. Seifer and Elizabeth A. Kennard, 270 pp, with illus, $99.50, 999 Riverview Dr, Suite 208, Totowa, NJ 07512, Humana Press (telephone: 973-256-1699), 1999, ISBN 0-896-03677-4
Type ofBook: A multiauthored text on menopause. Scope ofBook: This book is intended as a contemporary review of the physiologic changes associated with menopause and their management. Contents: The first 2 of the 16 chapters in the text describe changes in the endocrine system leading up to and through menopause. The next 5 chapters each focus on a specific physiologic system altered by menopause, including the cardiovascular, skeletal, urogenital, and central nervous systems. Another chapter is dedicated to early ovarian failure and surgical menopause. The subsequent 7 chapters discuss treatment of menopause. Specific topics addressed include hormone replacement therapy and associated cancer risks, nonestrogen alternatives, phytoestrogens, androgens, and selective estrogen receptor modulators. The final chapter attempts to provide a broad and integrative approach to the care of postmenopausal women. Strengths: The book provides relatively complete coverage of the major physiologic changes occurring at menopause and a generally up-to-date review of management options, including pertinent references. Deficiencies: The variable quality of the chapters and the redundancy of information indicate a general lack of editing, as do the typographic errors and incomplete reference lists (particularly in chapter 15 on phytoestrogens). The use of the term antiestrogens

in chapter 12, rather than selective estrogen receptor modulators as used in the rest of the book, highlights the inconsistent editing. The cursory chapter on nonestrogen alternatives does not cover venlafaxine or herbal approaches that patients often take and ask physicians about. The final chapter does not add much useful information. RecommendedReadership: Primary care physicians.
