NEWS M e s s a g e From Our President
Notes From Here and There
Reflections - - Past and Future The annual session is one month away and it seems only appropriate that I begin to wind down my year as president. I will save my farewell remarks for my next message, but it would be an understatement to say that I will miss this column. A great deal of time and effort has been spent in trying to make these messages relevant and concise. The first messages emphasized that for the AAE to excel we must have a participatory membership. Decisions involving our specialty must have input by members - - those people whose professional lives will be affected by the decisions made. Each month, to help with the decision/participation process, the important programs and activities of the AAE have been explained and updated. It is rewarding to see that this effort, combined with the Communique, Public Awareness Report, and visits to local and state endodontic organizations, has resulted in renewed interest by members. This rekindling of interest has been accomplished by what I perceive to be an increased sense of commonality of purpose and a stronger fraternal attitude similar to that existing when our numbers were much smaller. There is no question that the problems and concerns confronting the dental profession have helped to draw us together. We have seen that the health profession is not immune from forces of the economic marketplace and we are determined that we will not be overwhelmed by continued doom and gloom rhetoric. We have come to grips with the fact that we must control our own destiny. The days of success by being in the right place at the right time and by excelling in the sellers marketplace are over, but opportunities to enjoy a professionally rewarding and financially secure career are still very present. These opportunities will belong to those who can, as Avrom King states, accommodate by blending old ideals with new ways. The opportunities will belong to those who stay most informed, who are able to process that information to prepare for the future, and who can carefully integrate their energy and professional ethics into a course of action that will not only serve their best interest but also the interests of organized dentistry and, most impQrtantly, the patients they serve. The AAE is committed to the positive attitude that the specialty of endodontics is indispensible to the preservation of the unparalled quality of dental health enjoyed by the public we serve. Every attempt is being made to direct our program and future planning to enhance the legacy the AAE has established without any concern that these efforts are self-serving If what we have to offer is the best patients can receive, then all attempts to insure that they continue to receive this standard of care should be considered an obligation of the AAE rather than an act of self.
interest. The annual session in San Diego has set as its theme, "The Challenge of Change". The M E has accepted this challenge and annual session programs reflect many of the concepts discussed in this message, complemented by a very relevant scientific program. The business meeting will also address many of these important issues and promises to be well-attended. This is your opportunity to participate in the decision-making process of the AAE - - don't ~hirk your responsibility, See you in San Diego. Stephen F. Schwartz, DDS, MS President
