Message-switching software packages Two software packages designed to expand the facilities available with their 6100 automatic message switching system (ADX), have been announced by ITT Business Systems, UK. The UK3 package offers users facilities such as: • conversation -- which provides for dialogue communication between directly connected terminals and telex subscribers, and between two directly connected terminals, • hold f i l e - - i f a user regularly transmits the same type of information (e.g. stock lists or sales reports), this feature allows the messages to be stored in the system's hold file and quickly updated for transmission at any time, • billing -- this enables the system to record the use of communications facilities, so that it can be ascribed to individual originators of messages or other traffic and costs apportioned: billing is provided as two optional facilit i e s - cumulative or d i s c r e t e -

which can be selected to operate simultaneously, • VDU message input -- messages of unlimited length may be prepared at up to 20 VDUs using comprehensive editing features: pages of the message may be recalled for further editing before transmission. Enhanced message store is common to both the UK3 and UK4 packages. The basic 6100 ADX system has 2.5 Mbyte of storage, of which 1.5 Mbyte is available for message storage. With UK3, the capacity for message storage is increased to 5.0 Mbyte, and with UK4, to 10 or 20 Mbyte, giving a storage capacity of up to 13 000 input messages. Additional facilities offered by UK4 to enhance information distribution techniques include: • enhanced group codes--this feature expands the basic 6100 facility for group codes to a maximum of 250 codes of virtually limitless size, • increased routing codes-

The Wang remote cluster facility, which allows up to six OIS terminals to perform data processing tasks when remotely connected to any Wang virtual storage (VS) computer system. The company claim that this facility is suitable for users with normal word processing needs, but who also regularly require a data-processing file or program to be run. Support capabilities were also announced for the 2200 series small business computers. This means that users of Wang 2200 series computers will be able to communicate directlyto host mainframe computers within an IBM 3271 bisynchronous network, while maintaining local system responsiveness and control. The product consists of the 2228D data communications controller and the 22TC-3271 software package. This package includes the emulation of a 3271 Model 2 control unit, 3277 Model 2 display station, and 3288 Model 2 printer, supporting line speeds of up to 9600 bit/s. Printer terminal A range of printer terminals has been released by Daisy Terminals Ltd., UK. The 87Q has full serial communications a n d a relatively comprehensive command set. The microprocessor control system has both EPROM and RAM memory expansion to cope with specialized customer requirements. Both the receive-only and keyboard send/receive versions incorporate the power supply and microprocessor system within the printer case extension. A dual printhead option is available on the wide carriage. The standard carriage widths allow printing of 132 characters at 10 pitch, and 198 characters at 15 pitch; 10, 12, 15 pitch or proportional space fonts are available from over 70 different print wheels. The printer can print at either 45 or 55 cps on standard carriage models, and 40 cps with the wide carriage. The standard terminal command set on the 87Q series allows the user to select a variety of operating modes, including automatic proportional printing and graphics. The terminal system options include a command set to Diablo specification, Arabic receive only or keyboard send units, and special protocols providing compatibility with IBM and Burroughs systems.
