Finally, we consider the mean squared force for the case of liquid carbon monoxide, for which Gordon [Z] has estimated an experimental value of lffl~)~~ 850. Using the above potential parameters together with dipole and quadrupole moment values from Stogryn and Stogryn [ 101, we find for CO that (g”)’ = O.Q28 and (Q*)2 = 0.74; in addition Spurling and Mason [9] give 6 = 02. We see from fig. 1 that with these parameters the effect of ffie pure quadrupoIar forces on (F:) is about three times greater than the effect of the pure overlap forces, and much greater than that of the dipolar forces. For (Q*)Z = 0.74 tile MC I sults give /(E/o)~ x 650. From our results it __ not possible to give an exact MC value for (F$ due to the sum of quadrupofar and anisotropic overlap forces since the contributions will not be rigorously additive, However, if we da simply add the results we get an approximate MC result (~~)~(~~u~2 = 700, which is 20% closer to the experimental result than the pure quadrupolar value.
