Vacuum news single-phase power supply and requires no other services at all. Several versions of this unit are available, but basically they all take the form shown in the photograph. The unit is made in two parts, the console at the front end incorporating the control panel a n d helium compressor, and a framework at the back holding the gasbag for receiving the helium gas from the low-temperature experiments. The gasbag has a capacity of 100 ft 3 and is made of a fabric specially chosen for its low permeability. A choice of two compressors is available, one pumping at the rate of ½ standard fta/min and the other at 2 standard ft3/min. Both compressors are aircooled. Automatic operation is incorporated so that the compressor is started when the gasbag is nearly full, and stopped when the gasbag is nearly empty. The equipment is fully instrumented and protected by safety valves and is provided with audible alarms. Cryogenic temperature switches A new line of temperature switches for use at cryogenic temperatures has been announced by Cryogenics, Incorporated. The Model TS temperature switches are designed to provide an electrical contact closure as a function of a pre-determined temperature. The unit contains a highly sensitive element that detects the temperature at a copper sensing bulb. The ambient housing of this unit contains a snap-action switch which provides a contact closure as a function of this temperature.
New high-purity metals and alloys The Advanced Materials Division of the Materials Research Corporation have announced that they are now providing metals and alloys in purities higher than those previously attained. The materials are processed from the highest purity available starting stock under clean-room conditions to avoid impurity pickup. All melting is done in a vacuum or under inert atmospheres to minimize interstitial impurity levels. Alloys can be prepared with compositional tolerances from within 0.1 per cent to the parts per million range. Research and development as well as production quantities can be tailor-made with relatively short delivery time. Silicon multi-layer epitaxial slices New multi-layer silicon epitaxial slices, which are claimed to permit unusual, flexibility in design and production of integrated microcircuits, are now available in production quantities from Semimetals Incorporated. Fabricated to custom specifications, the multi-layer slices are said to provide the widest variety of n- and p-type combinations, in accurately controlled concentrations and thicknesses. They are available with any n u m b e r of layers of impurities desired, each of which can be either n- or p-type. The new slices can be supplied with surface oxide passivation. In this special Semimetals process, a protective oxide layer is deposited over the epitaxial surface after the last stage in the epitaxial growth, so that the surface is never exposed to the atmosphere. As a result, the slices are impervious to contamination from the atmosphere or in handling. Semimetals Incorporated, N Y, USA Circle number 68 on Reader Enquiry Service card
Electron-beam welding service Torvac Limited have announced that they are now operating an electron-beam welding service. This enables any company, large or small, to have the facility of using this technique for development and production without a large capital outlay. The type of work now being handled ranges from small pressure transducers to the stub axles fitted to earth-moving equipment. A leaflet describing the service and giving examples of contract work done and the salient features of the process is available. Torvac Limited, U K Circle number 69 on Reader Enquiry Service card
Cryogenic temperature switch These temperature switches may be used as alarms or to provide remote control of temperature-dependent components such as valves, pumps, transfer lines and heat exchanges. The Model TS temperature switches are available in setting of 4 ° to 245°K and are suitable for vacuum a n d pressure service to 500 lb/inL Cryogenics Incorporated, Virginia, USA Circle number 65 on Reader Enquiry Service card
Bulletin on liquid-nitrogen temperature-control systems A new system designed to maintain a continuous temperaturecontrolled flow of liquid nitrogen in circulating or pre-cooling applications is described in a bulletin now available from Cryogenics Incorporated. A Model 100TC Systems acts, according to Bulletin LN107, to limit the consumption of liquid nitrogen by providing " h i g h flow" for peak requirements a n d "bleed flow" for n o r m a l operation. The system consists of a fixed one-point temperature switch, a controller a n d a "bleed m o d u l a t o r " solenoid valve. W h e n the temperature at the sensing element is above the set point, the "bleed m o d u l a t o r " valve is energized to the "high flow" position. W h e n the temperature reaches the set point, the "bleed m o d u l a t o r " valve is deenergized to the "bleed flow" position. Complete operating characteristics, detailed specifications, and prices are included in this bulletin. Cryogenics Incorporated, Virginia, USA Circle number 66 on Reader Enquiry Service card

Metullography service A new bulletin from International Research & Development Company Limited (IRD) describes the facilities available for the metallographic evaluation of metallic and non-metallic materials. The equipment includes two Reichert " M e f " projection microscopes, a Reichert " Z e t o p a n " research microscope and a Zeiss lowpower stereo-microscope. The Reichert instruments are equipped for examining and photomicrographing materials by bright field and dark field, transmitted and reflected illumination, polarised light and interference contrast. Other accessories include a microhardness tester and a vacuum micro-furnace that permits the examination of materials at temperatures up to 1800 °C. The laboratory has received A I D approval. A n E M 6 electron microscope is available for examinations at magnifications up to × 120,000 and resolutions down to 10 A_ either by replica or by thin-foil techniques, and for the identification and determination of crystal structures by electron diffraction. The microscope is equipped with a goniometer stage allowing tilting and rotation of thin-film specimens to study the strain fields around dislocations and precipitate particles. Heating and cooling stages in which samples can be examined at temperatures from -- 150 ° to 2000 °C have been developed. A Phillips P W 1010 X-ray diffraction generator and a Hilger Microfocus unit are equipped to perform a wide range of functions. These and other facilities form part of extensive and well-equipped laboratories for metallurgy, physics, engineering, chemistry and allied sciences and the staff are able to draw on the advice and experience available in these disciplines.
