A dual conduit drill string used in drilling holes for geothermal, oil and gas wells, and the like, comprises a removable inner conduit to permit the use of salvage or repair equipment within the outer conduit. The outer conduit comprises standard API drill pipe sections which are each slightly modified to receive the removable inner conduit sections. Each inner conduit section is provided with flexible hangers for suspending the weight of the inner conduit from a support ledge formed on the interior surface of the drill pipe. The hangers permit upward removal motion and rotation of the' inner conduit with respect to the drill pipe, but prevent downward motion. Individual inner conduit sections are joined together at lockable stab joints in which locking is accomplished by the rotatable engagement of a key and locking socket. Preferably, the inner conduit is manufactured in uniform lengths and mounted in drill pipe sections of non-uniform lengths by means of drill pipe adaptor subs. In addition, a removal tool can be used to remove the inner conduit from the drill pipe by engaging the hangers of the lowest inner conduit.

The radiation detector system comprises a neutron absorbing and gamma ray radiating material which is moved by an articulating arm into contact with the borehole wall and is azimuthally oriented so that such neutron absorbing and gamma ray radiating material is firmly pressed against the formation. A shielding material minimizes absorption of neutrons from the borehole fluid. A gamma ray detector located in the main body of the logging tool detects gamma rays from the radiating material as a measure of the epithermal or thermal lifetime characteristic of the formation adjacent the borehole.

A pump is positioned wiithin the water lift well to raise relatively warm subsurface water having a temperature greater than freezing from the earth and delivering the relatively warm water into a conduit heat exchange system positioned beneath an exterior surface to be protected from snow buildup. At least one recharging well is positioned adjacent to the exterior surface to be protected and receives water from the conduit system positioned beneath the surface to be protected for permitting the water to re-enter the ground to be recharged with solar and/or geothermal heat stored within the ground. A non-return valve is positioned at a highest point between the pump and the heat exchange conduit system for permitting venting or drainoff of the system and air to enter the heat exchanger conduit system upon termination of subsurface water pumping. A vacuum relief means is provided for preventing a vacuum from being created within the water lift well in the event the well system is covered with snow accumulation or the like.
