This book contains the following chapters: I Sampling for vitamin analysis; 2 Vitamin A; 3 Carotene; 4 Thiamine; 5 R i b o f a v i n ; 6 Niacin; 7 Ascorbic acid; 8 Other vitamin methods; 9 Use of check samples in control of vitamin methods. The publication of this book marks a considerable advance on the way to standardization of vitamin methods, the editors being chiefly interested in estimation of the vitamins in food-stuffs and pharmaceuticals. The method.~ given in literature for the determination of each vitamin v a r y from one to many. Therefore it is necessary to introduce uniformity and to select the best methods available. This book contains methods based on chemical, physical and microbiological principles. The Association of Vitamin Chemists offers four types of food-stuffs for distribution of reference standards. To the discussion of each vitamin a list has been added which contains a n u m b e r of products analysed for their vitamin content. This does not mean t h a t the determination of vitamins in other products will give rise to difficulties, though one must realise t h a t this m a y be possible. The reviewer has looked in vain for some methods which have found extensive application, e.g. the chemical estimation of v i t a m i n A in blood serum and the chemical estimation 6f niacin. I t is hoped t h a t the authors wilt in future extend the scope of this manual by including methods for all vitamins, because m a n y methods not mentioned in this book are widely used by investigators.
