FW WINS EXXONMOBIL 5-YEAR LTA Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd has been awarded a fiveyear, Long Term Agreement (LTA) for ExxonMobil project work in Europe, including projects at ExxonMobil’s integrated refinery and chemical plant in Fawley, Southampton, UK. FW will provide front-end engineering design (FEED), detailed engineering, procurement and construction management services for selected refinery and chemical projects. FW has already started work on the front-end loading phase of ExxonMobil’s sulfurfree motor gasoline project, which is being developed to meet EU legislation for reducing sulfur in gasoline.
PIC, DOW PLAN ETHYLENE COMPLEX IN KUWAIT Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) of Kuwait and The Dow Chemical Co are to construct a new ethylene and derivatives complex in Shuaiba, Kuwait. Work on Olefins II is set to begin shortly with start up anticipated in early 2007. This project will build on the successful business relationship in EQUATE Petrochemical Co between PIC and Union Carbide Corp, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow. Olefins II will be similar to the existing plants at EQUATE with an 850 000 metric ton per annum ethane cracker and a new world-scale 600 000 metric ton per annum ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol plant.

the largest unit of its kind in the world. Kvaerner Power’s contract for supply of the boiler will be confirmed at a later stage.
METSO TO REBUILD SWEDISH PAPER MACHINE
Stora Enso Oyj and Aracruz Celulose SA are to construct a 900 000 tonnes per year eucalyptus pulp mill for Veracel Celulose SA at Eunápolis in Bahia, Brazil. Each company has a 50% stake in the project and will be entitled to half of the mill's output. The shareholders’ decision to approve the investment reflects the favourable outcome of feasibility studies. The mill will be the largest single-line bleached eucalyptus pulp mill in the world. The pulp mill project is budgeted at US$870 million. Construction of the mill will begin immediately and start-up is scheduled in mid 2005. A majority of services and equipment for the project will be locally sourced.
Metso will rebuild the PM1 copy paper machine at Stora Enso Fine Paper AB’s Nymolla mill in Sweden. The order is a part of the mill’s 20 million rebuild programme which will see the rebuilt line start up in February 2004. Metso Paper’s delivery will include replacing the machine calender, modernizing the predryer and afterdryer sections, upgrading the wire section exhaust system capacity and a new heat recovery stack for the dryer section. Metso Automation will also upgrade and extend the mill’s automation and control systems.
AKER KVAERNER WINS 100M CONTRACT IN CHINA

Aker Kvaerner’s Pulp & Paper business has signed a 100 million contract for equipment supply and engineering services for a new greenfield pulp mill in China. Kvaerner Pulping is to supply a complete fiberline, which will be the largest single-line fiberline in the world. The design, manufacturing of proprietary equipment and project management services will be supplied from Karlstad, Sweden. Aker Kvaerner is also working with the client to finalize the schedule and the financing for a recovery boiler rated at 5000 tons dry solids/day, which will also be
Mondi South Africa is to proceed with a R2 billion expansion and modernization of its Richards Bay mill in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, increasing capacity for bleached eucalyptus pulp production by 40%. The mill’s total capacity, which includes both eucalyptus pulp and whitetop kraftliner, will increase from the current 575 000 tonnes to 720 000 tonnes and the additional production will be available from early in 2005. Aker Kvaerner’s Pulp & Paper business is to supply and install the new fiberline for the Mondi mill. About 30% of the 65 million contract will be procured in South Africa.
MINING METSO TO SUPPLY FLUID BED DRYER TO CHILEAN MINE Metso Minerals will deliver a fluid bed dryer as a turn key project to Codelco, the Chilean national mining company. The 10 million contract includes engineering, supply, installation and start-up in the second quarter of 2004.
ZAMBIA’S KONKOLA INSTALLS NEW PUMP STATION Reuters reports that Zambia's Konkola Copper Mines is investing in a new US$12.8 million pump station at its Konkola underground operation. Three Zambian contractors - Spencon Tolyphase, Prosec Armco and Bruce Mining were hired in January, and work will be completed in August.
NEW DRILLING PROGRAM IN TANZANIA Canada’s Northern Mining Explorations Ltd has started a new drilling campaign at the Tulawaka gold project in Tanzania. This project is a 30/70 joint venture between Northern Mining and Pangea Goldfields, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corp, the project operator. Following on from the work done in 2002, the jointventure participants plan to carry out 4500 m of diamond drilling. This drilling will be concentrated on the West Zone, with the objective of further defining the geometry of the zone.
