In Memoriam Michael R. Redmond, MD We mourn the loss of Mike Redmond, MD. Dr Redmond died in June 2011 of pancreatic cancer. Those who knew him were privileged. He was a terrific friend, a giving individual, a team player, and an extraordinary colleague. Those who did not know him benefit from what he did—for his patients, for our profession, for his community. Mike was a tireless worker. He was passionate about what he did and was committed to making the world a better place. His leadership skills were irrepressible—from the time he served as his high school’s class president all four years, to his role as CEO for his medical center’s practice, to his service as president of virtually every organization in which he served, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Indeed, at the time of his death, he was in line to be president of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Mike also was one to identify important areas to devote his tireless energy. He saw—and responded to—the mine fields for medicine in the legislative arena. Recognition for these efforts came his way, such as being named the AAO’s Outstanding Advocate in 2011. He understood that local and regional arenas were just as important as the national ones that had brighter spotlights. Mike was one to detour back home for an important political issue at an instant’s notice, without fanfare or expectation for recognition. He was driven by value, not ego, to make this difference. Key to Dr Redmond’s drive seemed to be his patients and his recognition of their needs. He held professionalism high and was a member of the AAO’s Ethics Committee at the time of his passing. When he delivered his presidential address at the AAO’s annual meeting, there was heartfelt emotion as he spoke of our need to hold the highest professional standard.
