HIGH PURITY METALLIC COPPER

SUBMICRON

By hypercritical removal of the solvent (methanol at 275OC) I.N. Armor, E.I. Carlson and G. Carrasquillo [Materials Letters, 4 (8, 9) (1986) 3761 have prepared high purity, submicron powders of metallic copper. Apparently the copper salt (cupric acetate) is reduced in the autoclave by the combination of methanol and temperature. The same authors have also synthesized gold powder and copper-paladium alloys.

A NEW APPROACH TO THE OF SOLID-STATE REACTIONS

STUDY

In Philos. Mug. A, 53 (1) (1986) Ll-L6, Y.K. Simpson and C.B. Carter describe a new technique for the study of solid-state reactions. This technique uses a thin-film specimen geometry and allows TEM observations of the same specimen before and after the reaction. The technique is illustrated by the growth of NiAl,O, on (and into) an alumina substrate. Near-topotactic relationships between spine1 and alumina phases were observed. In reactions occurring at sufficiently low temperatures, this technique could also be used for in situ experiments.

ALUMINA FIBER/ALUMINA TRIX COMPOSITES PREPARED CVI TECHNIQUE

MABY

Lhermitte-Sebire and R. Naslain propose that fibrous alumina preforms can be densified with alumina by a dry chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) technique similar to those developed for carbon, SIC, B4C, TIC and BN matrices.

DOPED-ZIRCONIA

POWDER

Scientists at Battelle have developed a hydrothermal process to prepare dopedzirconia powders with physical and chemical characteristics superior to and more economical than those produced by other preparations. The process gives hydrous powders directly, without the calcination usually necessary to transform hydroxides to oxides. The particle size prepared is about 0.1 pm [Advanced Ceramic Materials, l(2) (1986) 1171. For information, contact D.E. Niese, Battelle, Columbus Div., 505 King Avenue, Columbus, OH (U.S.A.).

MICROBALANCE FERENCE

TECHNIQUES

CON-

As the IUPAC Symposium on Characterization of Porous Solids will be held on April 26-29, 1987, it has been decided to bring forward the XXIInd International Microbalance Techniques Conference from April 27-29 to April 21-23, 1987 (see meeting announcements).

NEW PUBLICATION Several attempts have been made to prepare alumina/alumina composite materials by the two-step wet processing technique, that is impregnation of a fibrous alumina preform with a slurry or with an organometallic aluminum compound followed by sintering.
