A recent installment of Microcomputers in Evaluation focused on advanced spreadsheet programs that integrate general number processing, statistical analysis, graphics, data base management, and other functions. An earlier Reader's Corner by Don Fitz described ways that spreadsheet programs can also be used for statistical analysis. Don is a research psychologist at St. Louis Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri. In this installment Don presents an in-depth discussion of the use of a spreadsheet to analyze patterns of small change in clients. Other readers are invited to submit short Reader's Corner pieces (1-2 pages) or longer guest author pieces (approximately 10 pages) that describe special ways that they have used microcomputers.
Analyzing Patterns of Small Client Changes with a Microcomputer Spreadsheet Don Fitz St. Louis Hospital It is not unusual for mental health evaluators to study a program whose effect is very small and to lack the resources to gather or analyze sufficient data to verify the program's impact. This article offers an approach for coping with this difficulty by describing a simple statistic for detecting small changes, explaining how it can be analyzed with a 50
