WORLD PUMPS

February 2010

Swimming pool pumps are energy-saving KSB Aktiengesellschaft has introduced the Filtra N pump series, the latest generation in the company’s range of swimming pool recirculation pumps. The new, self-priming closecoupled pumps can recirculate up to 36 m3 of swimming pool water in an hour and the maximum head is around 21 m. The shaft of the new pump is not in contact with the fluid

handled, as the impeller fully encases the shaft end. It is directly screwed to the shaft rather than being fastened with a screw outside the impeller, which could corrode and lead to the impeller becoming loose. The new shaft material has enhanced electromagnetic properties that reduce the energy input of the low-noise motors by 15% compared to the previous model.

High accuracy with vortex flow sensors Clark Solutions has developed a new range of liquid vortex flow sensors. The DN Series vortex Flow Sensors are reportedly accurate to 1% fs of measured value and are suitable for flow ranges from 0.9 to 150 l/min (0.24 to 39.6 GPM). They are suitable for water and water glycol based heat exchange systems, with the usual additives, and other fluids. DN Series Liquid Vortex Flow Sensors operate on the principle of Kármán’s vortex trail, where vortex-shedding flow meters present the flow in a pipe with

an obstruction/bluff in the flow meter body. As velocity increases, alternating vortices are formed on each side of the bluff body and travel downstream. The DN Series sensors utilize piezoelectric sensors embedded in a vane located downstream of the bluff to detect the generated vortices. The frequency measured represents the flow velocity. The result is a temperature insensitive measurement of flow with minimal pressure loss. A flow factor is provided to convert frequency to volume flow rate for each model size. www.clarksol.com

Centrifugal suitable for wastewater heads up to 330 ft. It can handle solids up to 3 in. According to the company, the pump is suitable for sewer by-pass pumping and abrasive applications, emergency flood response, and any other applications that require the transfer of liquids that contain solids. The 4JSCG pump for wastewater applications.

Thompson Pump says that its 4JSCG Enviroprime Pump is now available for wastewater applications. The pump is a high head 4 in automatic priming centrifugal pump that provides flows of up to 1,300 gallons per minute and www.worldpumps.com

It incorporates the Enviroprime priming system, which prevents product blow-by of pumpage, such as sewage, effluent and waste, from being discharged onto the ground or through hoses that carry the pumpage back to the source, making it environmental friendly. www.thompsonpump.com

The energy consumption is lowered further by the increased hydraulic efficiency of the newly designed diffuser. The filter basket has a volume of around 1330 cm3 and is easy to clean as it comes with a fold-out handle and can simply be pulled out of the housing. The casing is made of corrosion-resistant plastic material and equipped with two screwed plugs to allow

New models in gear range

The Viking gear pump, provided by Michael Smith Engineers.

The Viking external gear pumps range has recently been extended to include models which provide flows from 0.2 l/min to 760 l/min. The range now features 29 models, says Michael Smith Engineers, who is providing the pumps. The range now includes models rated for maximum continuous pressures up to 34 bar and maximum intermittent pressures up to 172 bar. In the pumps, shaft movement is minimised which can help

lengthen seal life, with radial (side-to-side) movement, or misalignment, prevented by close-coupled motor mounts, or outboard bearings for footmounted pumps. Axial (backand-forth) movement is minimised by spur-type gears, instead of helical gears, which can cause gear thrust on contact components. The pumps incorporate anti-friction needle bearings which eliminate bearing wear at start-up and shutdown. Viking SG Series Gear Pumps are suitable for centralised lubrication systems, polyurethane metering and mixing, compressor lubrication, burner feed, pipeline sampling, heat transfer and adhesive and sealant dispersion. www.michael-smith-engineers.co.uk

Microfluidic chip for immiscible fluid streams Dolomite has introduced the glass Y-Junction chip, which enables liquid-liquid contact of immiscible fluid streams.

The 22.5 x 15 mm chip has smooth channel surfaces for an uninterrupted flow. It can be used in a wide temperature and pressure range and is compatible with a wide range of chemical fluids. Its spectral transmission facilitates high visibility, making access with microscopy systems quick and easy. The chip can be customized by being etched to a range of

different depths, and custom channel layouts can be specified. As the surface of the channel walls has an effect on the fluid, the Y-Junction chip is available with hydrophilic, hydrophobic, platinum, or gold coatings. www.dolomite-microfluidics.com
