The role of N a n d O c o n t e n t s in s t a r t i n g and finished m a t e r i a l is considered. The sintering atmosphere is s h o w n t o significantly affect t h e b i n d e r element.

The s t r u c t u r e a n d mechanical p r o p e r t i e s of t h e m a t e r i a l were evaluated a n d was found to retain strength at temperatures up o 1500°C. Decomposition of t h e polymer was fond to leave a fine r i b b o n like network of C in t h e s t r u c t u r e a n d t h e m a c h i n a b i l i t y of t h e m a t e r i a l is a t t r i b u t e d to this. It is suggested t h a t t h e m a t e r i a l will find high t e m p e r a t u r e applications.

Interactions, during liquid phase sintering, of WC c e m e n t e d with pure Ni or a Ni-base alloy have been investigated. It is r e p o r t e d t h a t t h e Ni base liquid p h a s e a b s o r b s material from h e carbide resulting in s t r u c t u r a l changes. The p r o d u c t i o n of Ni and Ni base c e m e n t e d WC alloys w i t h p r o p e r t i e s similar to those of WC-Co was demonstrated.

Structural transformations occurring during t h e sintering, a t high pressures, 100 M P a a n d t e m p e r a t u r e s , 1700 t o 2000°C, of wustite AIN were investigated by electron microscopy. AIN was k n o w n to undergo plastic deformation, recrystalline, r e c r y s t a l l i z a t i o n a n d t h e f o r m a t i o n of micropores in t h e grain boundaries. The f o r m a t i o n of s p h a l e r i t e was n o t detected and this is a t t r i b u t e d to high stacking fault energies. Cubic a l u m i n i u m oxynitride was also f o u n d a t h i g h t e m p e r a t u r e a n d pressures.

No oxidation or c h a n g e of composition were found. Surface cavities containing eroded particles were n o t e d in t h e m e l t e d surface layer as were d e e p e r structural alterations. (In J a p a n e s e ) . The paper describes experiments designed to improve the mechanical p r o p e r t i e s of SiC by alloying w i t h up to 20mo%A1N. Specimens were fabricated by HIP of reaction synthesized solid solution material. The solid solution alloys were found to have s t r e n g t h s u p to 1000 MPa a t 5%A1N w i t h i n c r e a s e d fracture toughness. In t h e two p h a s e alloys t h e p r e s e n c e of A1N particles increases s t r e n g t h and fracture t o u g h n e s s more effectively. Surface swelling of SiN a n d A1203 w h i c h h a d been subjected to N, Si a n d Ni ion b o m b a r d m e n t was m e a s u r e d as a function of ion dose. S a t u r a t i o n of t h e surface was found to occur. For heavier ions a n d lower t e m p e r a t u r e s t h e a m o u n t of swelling a t s a t u r a t i o n was found to be greater.

The effects of p r o c e s s v a r i a b l e s o n mechanical a n d physical properties of TiNi are described t o g e t h e r with t h e effects of porosity and the characteristics the interparticle contact zones. The quality of t h e interparticle contact is k n o w n to affect t h e properties in t h e porosity r a n g e 30 to 40%. D e f o r m a t i o n c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s a n d a m a r t e n s i t i c t r a n s f o r m a t i o n are discussed.
