he Mid Atlantic Region is comprised of members from Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia. We have enjoyed a 30-year history of active members, committed leadership, and national representation. The region has 5 active affiliates, each of which meets regularly to ensure that clinical and networking needs are met. Each affiliate is unique in its ability to provide professional and community education; the energy of the affiliates is boundless! We are proud to acknowledge the accomplishments of Bonnie Cunningham, National Conference Planning Committee chair, Mikel Gray, recipient of the 1999 WOCN President's Award, Harriet Pilert and Penny Crawford, who have successfully implemented the new patient Information data system program, and Joan Selekof, just elected to the National Nominations Committee. Some of our members have also sought experiences away from the traditional WOC nursing role, such as exploring practice areas in complementary medicine, Haitian mission work, and nursing in Saudi Arabia. Our membership has grown to a record number of 220; we congratulate the WOC nurses who have successfully completed their educational programs and applaud the efforts of the industry members who have joined our ranks! Our elections this spring brought "new blood" to the board for the positions of treasurer (Carol Hawkins) and member at large (Katie Hudson). Our secretary (Betty Swap) was elected for a second term. Carol and Katie are in transition now with their respective and greatly appreciated predecessors, Marijo Solomon and Donna McMullen. Kudos for past work well done! Our newsletter editor/communications chair Lolly McCance has been busy putting together 3 issues for us this year while tirelessly seeking industry support. A newly added newsletter feature this year is a "member profile" that will Introduce read-

ers to veteran and new regional members. President Sue Currence attended the Professional Practice Institute in Las Vegas this year, while President-Elect Brenda Hensley attended the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) program in Washington, DC. Both reported that the leadership and growth experiences were invaluable. The NIWI opportunity is rotated from state to state each year, and funding for additional board members to attend the Professional Practice Institute is being sought for Y2K. Since 1998 we have established an ongoing regional fund-raiser with WOCN patches, and sales are brisk! One of our members at large coordinates this activity. We are delighted to see our advertisement appear in JWOCN. The patches are quickly becoming a mainstay at regional conferences, and this year we will include the chance to win a digital camera. Our regional conference and business meeting will be held in Williamsburg, Va, October 15-17. This year we will depart from our traditional annual venue as we partner with the Wound Healing Center of the Medical College of Virginia to offer continuing education. This collaborative approach, versus a competitive one each fall, will provide the opportunity for our members and nonmembers alike to interface with a large variety of disciplines and presenters on the topic of focus, pressure ulcers. The organizational skills and vision of members and Continuing Education chair Harriet Pilert and Wound Healing Center Nursing Director Sue Creehan ensure the success of this program; we look forward to this exciting and first-time endeavor! Our region continues to grow and prosper. We are proud to be where we are and who we are as we approach the millenniurn. We are forever indebted to the leaders we have had in the past and will continue to support those in the future who spur us on to even greater challenges and accomplishments.
