ARCHIVES OF
PSYCHIATRIC NURSING February 2000
Vol. XlV, No. 1 EDITORIAL
Millennium Milestones T WAS 7 YEARS AGO that Archives of Psychiatric Nursing entered into an agreement to become the official journal of the Society for Education and Research in Psychiatric Nursing (SERPN). We entered into a partnership based on a shared mission to develop the field of psychiatric mental health nursing through practice, education, research, and policy. Dr. Cecelia Taylor was a significant architect of this partnership. So, it was my pleasure to introduce her to our readership in February 1993 as the first SERPN Associate Editor of Archives of Psychiatric Nursing. Since that time Cecelia has contributed 42 SERPN News columns, 10 editorials, and countless hours of editorial review. This is not to mention her wise counsel over the years as the relationship between Archives of Psychiatric Nursing and SERPN changed and matured. Recently, Dr. Taylor was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. This personal milestone for her means another milestone for Archives of Psychiatric Nursing. Cecelia has decided that she must step down as Associate Editor as she assumes greater responsibility at St. Scholastica, responsibility that will necessitate a broadened vision well beyond the boundaries of psychiatric nursing. Thus, with this issue we bid Cecelia farewell and announce a new Associate Editor. I offer a heartfelt thanks to Cecelia for all of her contributions to psychiatric mental health nursing, SERPN, and Archives of Psychiatric Nursing and kudos for the latest milestone in her career! I will miss Cecelia for many reasons, not the least of

which is that I am losing my comedic partner in crime at SERPN workshops! Never one to leave transitions to chance, Cecelia consulted with Dr. Lorna Barrell, the SERPN Division Director of the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, and found her replacement. Much to my delight, Dr. B. Lee Walker has agreed to serve as the SERPN Associate Editor commencing with this first millennium issue! Lee has been an active member of SERPN since 1989, serving first as chair of the By-Laws Committee and later as editor of the SERPN News Series from 1997 to 1998, when SERPN merged with ACAPN and ISPCLN to form the International Society of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses (ISPN). She has worked in psychiatric/mental health nursing since 1976, then as a nurse and therapist in a community mental health setting and later as an instructor at Mennonite College of Nursing, Bloomington, IL, supervising undergraduate students in clinical rotations at state mental hospitals in Decatur and Springfield, IL. Lee has a Bachelor's in Nursing from the University of Illinois, Sangamon (a second degree), a Master's in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing from Rush University, and a Ph.D. in Nursing Research from The University of Texas at Austin. Since 1989, she has served on the faculty at the University of Utah College of Nursing, teaching primarily in the graduate program. Over the years, her clinical and research interests have focused on family management of chronic illness. Initially, Lee worked with patients with

severe and persistent mental illness and their families, and later expanded her research and clinical interests to include patient and family member adjustment after cancer treatment. Lee's appointment as Associate Editor for Archives of Psychiatric Nursing brings her career full circle, as her first Bachelor's degree was in Journalism (from Stanford University). Thus, we have thrown her in the deep end! The SERPN News for

this issue is Lee's first contribution. And, it will not be long before you are reading her editorials. As we make our way in this new millennium I feel secure that the partnership between Archives of Psychiatric Nursing and SERPN remains in good hands !
