APPLICATIONS GLASS MICROSPHERES/ EPOXY THERMOFORMING PLUG
Precise control over the sidewall distribution of material in thermoforming deep-drawn parts, hence, material savings Called economies, are offered by a new type of assist plug. Therm0 Plug, the units can be fitted to new thermoforming machines, or retrofitted to existing ones. The plug material is a syntactic foam with very low thermal conductivity, which takes very little heat from the preheated sheet. This enables the thermoformer to control accurately the material distribution in the sidewalls of the parts. Though suitable for any standard thermoformable material, the new plugs are claimed to be particularly effective in thermoforming PET or CPET where the relatively high forming temperature of around 280 C makes heat losses especially critical. According to the supplier, Gemini Plastic Machinery in the UK.,thermoformer output can be increased by up to 12% compared with conventional plugs. The foam is based on glass microspheres dispersed in an epoxy resin with special additives. The supplier claims to have achieved an exceptionally smooth surface finish. Mod. Plast. Int., 1987, -17,
MINERAL REINFORCED NYLONS
(April), 24
During the early years of their development, mineral reinforced nylons showed relatively slow growth rates in the European sector, Because they permit tailor-made compounds to be made which meet exacting demands to a far greater extent than other material groups, they are now gaining acceptance for a wide range of applications and show potential for a further range of diverse end uses, which are reviewed in this article, Kunst., 1987, 7J, (May), 505-8
