CONFERENCE REPORT
Mini-symposium on Photodynamic Medicine: On the way to success Organised by Research Division of Gynaecology, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, University Hospital, Zurich (Head: Professor Heinrich Walt, PhD) I must confess that when I received notification of the above meeting with an invitation by Professor Heinrich Walt (Department of Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Zurich University) to give a talk there, I was in the midst of preparing for what was to become one of the busiest months in my diary this year. However, I gave in to temptation and made the journey to Zurich, the city that I first visited many years back when I was a student in Geneva. The mini-symposium proved to have a ‘‘maxi’’ programme of various subjects of interest to all PDT enthusiasts. The first part of the programme was chaired by Professor Guilio Jori (Italy) and consisted of papers presented by the local PDT scientists. Dr Schneider started the meeting with a paper on ‘‘From St. John Wort to Porphyria—–a different perspective of PDT’’. Then Dr Buchholtz talked about her experimental work on ‘‘in-vivo pharmacokinetics of mTHPC’’. This was followed by a presentation by Miss Selm, who gave an insight into ‘‘Photonic meets textile’’. This paved the way for the next talk by Dr Dannemann on ‘‘Intra and extra oral application of a textile light diffuser’’ that is a real innovation from Zurich, which I believe will have a great future. The second part of the Programme was chaired by Professor K. Moghissi (UK) and comprised of clinical PDT papers. All of the presenters were invited speakers. Dr Staff (Germany) presented his experience ‘‘PDT of oral leukoplakia’’. Then Professor Moghissi gave a talk on fluorescence bronchoscopy and PDT in lung cancer. Profes-

sor Jichlinski (Switzerland) gave a paper on ‘‘Fluorescence Cystoscopy’’ which was followed by Professor Braathen (Switzerland) who presented his experience of ‘‘PDT in Dermatology’’. The meeting ended with a buffet. Of coincidence, on that day, Switzerland played France in the World Cup and unexpectedly drew. This provided an excellent opportunity to celebrate the event with our host.
