productnews Digital photometer detects filter leaks and tests filter efficiency

The new 2H digital photometer from Air Techniques International is designed to detect and measure mass concentrations of aerosol or leeching particulates in process streams. Thus, it suitable for checking that filtration systems on production processes are operating within the correct parameters, or that users are meeting required regulatory standards. The device is intended for pollution monitoring, filter certification, pharmaceutical testing and other applications in the

medical, bioscience and industrial sector. The fully automated self-contained test system is portable and consists of a vacuum pump, scattering chamber, selector valve, internal ULPA filter, external HEPA filter (on the vacuum pump exhaust) analogue to digital converter, and a microprocessor. The 2H measures the amount of particulates coming through a filter. It has a range of 0.1 micron to 600 micron and takes a continuous sample at 28.3 litres/min (l/m) at atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the internal vacuum pump on the system enables sample to be taken without disturbing the product flow. Aerosol concentrations can be measured down to 0.0001 µg/litres. Microprocessor control allows users to quickly set desired operational parameters, without the need for calibration or manual wiring.

Miniature pumps for wide ranging filtration applications Several small-scale pumps have been launched that are designed for filtration applications in a wide range of industrial sectors. Lee Products Inc (www.leeproducts.co.uk) (Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, UK) and HNP Mikrosysteme (www.hnp-mikrosysteme.de) of Parchim, Germany, have both introduced miniature pump ranges. Called the LPV and mzr® series, respectively, they can be used in conjunction with a variety of filtration systems as the dispensing element. The newly launched PR series, from the Japanese company, Pan World Co Ltd (www.panworldjp.com), is also suitable for filtration duties. The compact LPV series of variable volume pumps can self-prime and dispense fluids in increments from as little as 0.1 µl. Its operational pressures range from -0.69 bar on the inlet side to 1 bar on the discharge flow. The mzr pump can dispense at 50 µl/min and comes with a motor size of just 1 mm in its smallest configuration. Both pumps are suitable for use in bioscience applications. The PR series has been designed for use in marine and fresh water tanks on a water circulation and biological filtration duty. The series is available in three basic models, the PR-600, the PR-900 and the PR-2000. The serial number of each unit refers to the pump's maximum flow rate capability. For example, the PR-600 can achieve a flow rate of 600 litres/hour (l/h) at a head of 0.5 m and a motor input of 5 W. The pump has a one-piece rotor assembly suitable for biological and wet and dry trickle filters. A strainer and filter foam enable it to perform filtration duties. Filtration+Separation

The device only has seven push buttons and a digital display that contains a set-up menu and diagnostic codes. This should ensure easy programming and operator convenience. Other features include two pre-set reference values (DOP & PAO) for aerosol agents, as well as a user setting that allows a sampled concentration to be stored as a reference value for the future. An optional heavy-duty case, with a robust lock, can be specified for hazardous locations, but the standard device is delivered in diecast aluminium, which provides sufficient protection for the internal mechanics in most working environments.
