Otolaryngology– Head and Neck Surgery August 2003

Scientific Session—Tuesday

ing (MRI). The analyses should also be performed with regard to possible gender-related differences. Methods: Fifteen healthy volunteers participated in the study. The anatomical position of the VNO was measured in relation to columella and the floor of the nasal cavity. MRI was performed before and after endoscopically controlled instillation of diluted contrast agent. Results: A tubular structure was found in 12 subjects with a mean length of 13 mm (range, 5-47 mm). In three subjects a nearly circular, pouch-like structure was observed. Seven of

the tubular VNOs were slightly bent upwards; the other VNOs ran parallel to the floor of the nasal cavity. Analyses regarding possible gender-related differences revealed a tendency (P ⫽ 0.10) for longer VNOs in men (mean, 17.4) compared to women (mean, 7.4). Conclusions: These data indicate that tubular VNOs may be more extended and variable than previously thought. In addition, data are provided which are in favor of a careful, submucoperichondrial approach in septal surgery, even when no ipsilateral opening of the VNO is detectable.

10:30 AM to 12:00 PM Room OCCC 204 • Miniseminar: Globus and Dysphagia: A Case Presentation Approach

Multiple cases will be presented. A focus will be placed on the differential diagnosis and subsequent management of dysphagia. Cases will include discussion of structural abnormalities, laryngopharygeal reflux, cricopharyngeal spasm/dysfunction, and dysphagia in children. The evaluation of dysphagia will include discussion of Ph monitoring, manometry, transnasal esophagoscopy, and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, with and without
