Nucleating agent

A new nucleating/clarifying agent from ICI Polymer Additives trade-named Clarifex 800 overcomes the deficiencies of organic salt or sorbitol ester materials, and provides a balance of clarity, retort food clearance, reduced colour build-up, reduced cycle times, and a broader processing spectrum. The composition is processed materials based on esters, acids, salts, and other organic compounds. It is particularly effective in polypropylene homopolymers and copolymers and a range of polyolefmes.

Hoechst coupling agents

Hostaprime HC5 coupling agent from Hoechst UK is widely used to promote adhesion between PP and polar materials such as in glass fibre composites. Typical addition levels are in the region of around 0.05 to 2.0 phr, with the optimum level determined by the amount of filler in the compound. HC5 has also been used successfully in lamination of PP film with metallic foils where it is reported to have improved the adhesion.

Fire retardant for bituminous materials

Amgard MC EP311, from Albright & Wilson, is a blend of ammonium polyphosphate, melamine and pentaerythritol which has been formulated especially as an additive for the production of flame retardant bituminous materials used in coatings.

Mixed metal oxide pigments

HEUCODUR Pigments from Heuback are mixed metal oxide pigments with rutile or spine1 structure. They are nearly inert and have also excellent fastness properties due to production temperatures of more than 1000°C. HEUCODUR pigments are non toxic. Due to their excellent fastness properties they are most suitable for pigmentation of systems where high light-, weather- and/or chemical properties are required.

Non-toxic masterbatches

Ecocolour is the name of a range of polymer specific mas~rba~hes produced from non-toxic pigments and additives by Europol Ltd, UK. The company use organic piaents in combination with titanium dioxide, ultramarine pigments and iron oxides. They do not contain heavy metal or Casio pigments, and are compatible with the following polymers: low density polyethylene; high density polyethylene; polypropylene, and polystyrene, and can be used in a variety of applications viz: bottles, pipes, crates, toys, packaging - general pharmaceutical containers and general rno~~gs. Conductive

Polymers

A six page brochure from Bekaert Corp. Marietta, GA, USA describes characteristics and features of steel fibres used to produce electrically conductive plastics. notation is included about colourability, mouldability, and design flexibility.

Filled polypropylene compounds

l%ernational Polymers Corp, Allentown, PA, USA has developed new filled ~lypropylene compounds that have been rated as BE594by Underwriters’ Laboratories. Filled with talc or calcium carbonate and available in natural and black in free-flowing uniform pellets, these products are recommended for injection moulding applications.

High temperature thermoplastic compounds

BASF Corp, Plastics Materials, Parsippany, NJ and CompoundingTechnologyInc, Corona, Calif, USA have entered a long-term agreement to develop and manufacture hightemperature thermoplastic compounds, such as glass- and
