Normal cure composite tape seal for cable joints Applicant: Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust, India An insulated wire joint is enveloped by insulation tape and the edges are sealed by non-curable polysulphide mix. The joint is then covered with polyester film and the edges of the film are fixed with poly paste followed by winding tightly with insulation tape. End seals are made around the cable surface by using curable polysulphide mix, and enclosing the entire seal by winding with elastomer tape. It is then covered by winding a flexible normal cure composite (NCCS) tape made of glass fibre impregnated with polysulphide mix having a polyethylene peel-off film. The seal is intended to prevent water seepage and termite attacks to the cable joint under ground or under water.

Metal gasket Applicant: Japan Metal Gasket Co Ltd, Japan This patent describes a metal cylinder head gasket which is designed to provide stabilized sealing performance with reduced cost. The combustion chamber edge is formed by the double metal thickness portion (12). A raised metal bead (14, 15) is formed between the combustion chamber hole and the outer periphery of the gasket by bending the base plate (10). When the gasket is tight-

ened the surface thickness is concentrated at the combustion chamber portion (12). An elastic seal member (24) is formed either side of the raised beads (14, 15) to be compression-deformed in the direction of the plate thickness when the gasket is tightened. MLS gasket with wire ring stopper Applicant: Dana Corp, USA This patent is concerned with multilayer steel gaskets and improving the reliability of heavy duty diesel engines where gasket cracking and combustion failures are a problem. A multi-layer steel cylinder head gasket (10) includes a spacer layer (26) between two beaded mirror image outer layers (30, 32). A wire ring stopper (24) extends about the boundary of a combustion opening in the stopper layer (20). The gasket is comprised of inner and outer active sealing layers of full-hard stainless steel. Disposed between the inner and outer sealing layers is a low carbon or stainless steel spacer extending partially into a flange. A steel wire ring is disposed entirely within the flange; the flange is not contiguous with the inner and outer sealing layers. The gasket thus incorporates a gap between the flanged portion and the inner and outer active layers that helps to decouple stresses on the wire ring from those on the active layer. Separating the

inner and outer active layers from the flanged portion of the gasket helps prevent cracking and enhance sealing. Depending on the harshness of the application, either a low carbon or stainless steel wire ring may be employed, the stainless steel ring being preferred for the most arduous conditions. The use of a steel wire ring combustion seal, spaced radially from the active gasket layers, helps to eliminate bead cracking. The wire ring facilitates conformability of the combustion seal. This enables it to maintain a seal for a greater range of engine hardware deflections. Localized motions are limited due to the relative robustness of the wire ring. A flanged wire ring, situated in the manner described, is considerably more compliant to stresses applied both laterally and axially, and is thus more resistant to cracking.
