New e q u i p m e n t Portable conductivity tester for non-ferrous alloys A portable conductivity tester for verifying phosphorus content in copper tubing and bar stock has been developed by K.J. Law Engineers. The Verimet M4900C uses eddy current test methods to measure the conductivity of copper and copper alloys. For example, copper CDA-1 22, an alloy widely used in the heat exchanger and air conditioning industries, requires strict control of its

phosphorus content to permit silver alloy brazing and soft soldering. Brazing using incorrect alloy mixes can result in embrittlement, porosity or tube wall leaching - - all of which can cause premature failure of expensive compressor systems. The instrument works well on rough or finished surfaces including forgings, castings, sheet or round stock and small parts of reasonable mass. It provides a
The Verimet probe can be fitted with any of a wide variety of interchangeable adapters for use on round or flat stock.

Non-contacting ultrasonic techniques and applications A one-day meeting at Warwick University is being organized to review the present status and future possibilities of non-contact generation and detection of ultrasound. Presentations will describe the techniques of ultrasound generation by pulsed lasers, chopped cw lasers and by EMATs in conjunction with ultrasound detection by laser interferometry and EMATs. Potential applications will be emphasized. Since the field is now more than ten years old it is intended to address the question of industrial relevance of the various methods and pinpoint the areas where non-contacting techniques can make a significant contribution.

Exhibition relaunch The Test and Transducer Exhibition will now be known as Sensors & Systems. The organizers, Trident International Exhibitions, felt that the 'test' element was never particularly strong, and caused confusion.

-Pubfications Case study highlights benefits of vibration analysis An application note illustrating the applications of machine condition monitoring using vibration analysis has been published by Bruel & Kjaer.
The meeting is sponsored by the Physical Acoustics Group and Materials & Testing Group of the Institute of Physics, the Research Group of the British Institute of NDT and the Institute of Acoustics, and will take place on 21 March 1989.
The 12-page leaflet provides a survey of a vibration analysis programme at the North Anna nuclear power station in central Virginia. An undertaking involving monitoring of more than 90 individual machines, the programme was implemented in 1984 and has consistently produced large cost savings.

the containment building. The application note discusses the instrumentation and the test regimes, detailing a number of examples where the monitoring programme has successfully tracked down faults and prevented catastrophic breakdown. Although based on operations in a nuclear power plant, the information given is applicable in most respects to fossil fuel plants, and offers guidelines to any engineer involved in machinery maintenance.
