Modeling bioheat transfer processes and thermoregulatory responses

There has been a marked growth in studies related to finding new ways to quickly and accurately predict changes in core, shell, and skin temperatures in humans and animals for a variety of applications involving distributed, regional, and localized thermal loads. Thus, the editors concluded that a comprehensive special issue on the theoretical and computational methods to model in vivo heat transfer as well as the use of new and traditional bioheat transfer models in predicting tissue heating would be a timely and invaluable resource. This special issue is comprised of fourteen papers on various topics of computational modeling of thermoregulation including diverse topics such as, novel analytical approaches to model bioheat transfer process, computational approaches for solving bioheat transfer models, responses of humans subjected to thermal stress, modeling of thermoregulation in premature infants, predicting effects of ambient temperature on heat exchange of the human eye, and modeling of body heat transfer as it relates to forensic science. The guest editors are most thankful to the contributors of this special issue. It is hoped that the papers in this issue will spur new

discussions and discoveries on how to best model – accurately and precisely – both subject- and application-specific in vivo heat transfer processes that encompasses multiple spatiotemporal scales.
