Modern Immunocytochemistry 16-27 February 1987 Theory and practice of a variety of immunocytochemical techniques for the light microscope comprising the latest advances in immunofluorescence, immunoenzyme and immunogold methods for frozen, paraffin and resin sections, cytological and culture preparations. The first week will be mainly based on technical aspects, including ancillary techniques and laboratory work. The second week will consist mainly of lectures and round-table discussions on applications of immunocytochemistry to pathology and biology. Time will be available during the course for participants to carry out their own projects under supervision. Course organisers: Julia M. Polak and Susan Van Noorden (Histochemistry). Closing date: 31st October 1986. Course fee: 1 week £300, 2 weeks £530 (including lunch but not accommodation)

A two-week laboratory-based course on topical molecular biological techniques is offered as a single unit or as separate modules.

Techniques in Human Molecular Genetics 30 March-3 April 1987 The objective of the course is to show how gene probes can be used to investigate genetic polymorphisms and genomic changes in somatic cells at the DNA level. Laboratory work will cover: DNA extraction; purification and digestion of plasmids; nick translation; digestion of human DNA with restriction enzymes and agarose gel electrophoresis; Southern blot analysis. Lectures will deal with the theoretical basis of the techniques used, and also with the following topics: eukaryotic gene structure and expression; restriction fragment length polymorphisms; DNA methylation; rearrangements of immunoglobulin genes in lymphoid cells. Course organiser: Lucio Luzzatto (Haematology). Closing date: 31st October 1986. Course free: £300 (including lunch but not accommodation).

Hybridisation Histochemistry 6-10 April 1987 Topics covered will include: Construction and labelling of available probes, single and double stranded cDNA, nick translation of cDNA probes with radiolabels and biotinylated nucleotides, oligonucleotides, T4-kinase end-labelling, SP6 vectors and riboprobes. Tissue collection, fixation and sectioning; pre-hybridisation and choice of probes; conditions for hybridisation; visualisation systems, autoradiography, chromogenic methods, avidin-biotin, streptavidingold, enhancement procedures etc. RNAse inhibition. Cytological preparations. Course organisers: Julia M. Polak, Giorgio Terenghi, Ian M. Varndell (Histochemistry). Closing date: 31st October 1986. Course fee: £300 (including lunch but not accommodation). Course fee: £530 for attendance at both courses.
