Alan G. Marshall and Francis R. Verdun. Elsevier, Amsterdam and New York, 1990. 450 pages. Paperback, $49.95. ISBN O-444-87412-7. The first six chapters of this volume deal with general considerations involved in converting the time response to a stimulus into a spectrum of frequencies, starting with the example of the motion of a mass on a spring. The properties of Fourier transforms, algorithms for carrying out the transformation, noise considerations, and characteristics of spectrometers are discussed. Non-FT methods are also introduced in one of the chapters. The second half of the book consists of three longer chapters, each containing a more detailed account of the application of FT methods to one of the important areas of spectroscopy: ion cyclotron resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance, and interferometry in the infrared, UV, and visible regions. The book has many very valuable features, including useful lists of references and quite substantial arrays of problems at the ends of the chapters, with solutions given to most of the problems, either in detail or in outline. The appendix contains mathematical relations, pictures of FT pairs, and program listings for carrying out transforms. To cover all of NMR spectroscopy from the magnetogyric ratio to 2D and imaging in a single chapter is, of course, quite an achievement. There is obviously not much room for detailed explanations or exposition of ideas. Although the pace is rather breathless, the essential points are presented, and the development is reasonably systematic and logical. This book should be very useful as a textbook for an advanced course in spectroscopic methods or for self-study for anyone who wishes to obtain an overall view of the nature and use of transforms, along with supporting practical details. This interesting and useful book contains a variety of spectral examples and exercises related to actual spectra. It is designed primarily for use with the text by Sanders and Hunter published by Oxford in 1987, but it could also be used quite independently. It does include, as well, examples of more sophisticated methods developed after the writing of the 1987 text. The main body of the text is preceded by an introduction and guide, with hints about the approach to spectral analysis and a reference list. Chapter 1, suitably titled 671

“Errors I Have Made,” contains illustrations of inappropriate procedures for acquiring spectra, each followed by an explanation. The next four chapters cover, respectively, spectral interpretation, symmetry and exchange, structure determination using NMR alone, and structural and mechanistic studies in which the NMR results are supported by data from other techniques. The examples include spectra of a wide variety of organic and inorganic molecules as well as spectra of assorted nuclei. Toward the end of the book is a list of “hints” which suggest key points related to the solution of each of the problems, and there is finally a listing of “solutions,” which contains either the details of the analysis of the problem or a reference to the paper in the literature which includes an interpretation of the results. The problems presented are fun to work out and should be instructive, some of them perhaps challenging, even for an experienced spectroscopist, and the workbook is highly recommended as an introduction to the practical aspects of NMR.
