bestrol as an example); estrogen as a carcinogen: genetics and molecular biology of human endometrial carcinoma; mechanisms of chemically-induced follicular cell carcinogenesis of the thyroid gland; environmental causes of breast cancer: future research directions. Featuring contributions from leading experimental and epidemiological researchers, this book effectively summarizes the current status of this increasingly important area, and offers valuable data to guide ongoing investigations in the field. Biomedical and clinical researchers in oncology or endocrinology and celldevelopment biologists - particularly those interested in growth regulation or environmental toxicology - will find this work a stimulating and useful source of information.

Blood. Principles and Practice of Hematology. RI Handin, TP Stossel SE Lux. Eds. Lippincott-Raven, Philadelphia, 1995. This book, written by Harvard Medical School professors, is very well conceived. It collects the substantial material of experience and authority from distinguished scholars and experienced clinicians. It is interesting to note that physiopathology and clinical lore are emphasized according to the supposed needs of the readers. The illustrations give a concrete view of the relevant observations. One is struck by the large bibliography which reveals long and important research and knowledge. We thank the authors for having written such a complete book about blood which has been revised several times to keep the information current.

Drug Resistance. Cancer Treatment and Research 87. WN Hait. Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, Dordrecht, London, 1996. Resistance to treatment represents the final common outcome for far too many patients with cancer. Even our most promising new drugs fall victim to drug resistance. Hormones and newer biological therapies. though safe and active. also become less active over time. In this volume of Drug Resistance, leading investigators in the field have reviewed the most basic mechanisms of drug resistance and have proposed ways to modulate resistance. This comprehensive volume should be of value to basic and clinical scientists who wish to delve more deeply into what is an intriguing problem in the laboratory but a devastating problem in the clinic.

Epithelial-Mesenchymal Interactions in Cancer. ID Golberg, EM Rosen. Birkhluser Verlag AG, Basel, 1995. The contribution of epithelia-mesenchyme interaction to normal development (eg, tissue formation) and to neoplasia has become a subject of increasing interest to research scientists because of recent progress in deciphering the molecular signals that mediate this interaction. Clearly. some of the same types of molecules (eg, growth factors and their receptors, proteolytic enzymes, cell adhesion molecules, and structural proteins of the extracellular matrix) mediate exchange of information between epithelia and mesenchyme during normal development and malignant growth. However. defects in the regulation of this exchange appear to contribute to malignancy by allowing growth-promoting, invasogenie, and angiogenic factors to accumulate within the microenvironment of the tumor. For example, recent studies suggest that abnormal interactions between tumor epithelial cells and stromal mesenchymal cells contribute to the overproduction and accumulation of scatter factor (hepatocyte growth factor), an invasogenic and angiogenic cytokine, in certain types of tumor. The production and and activation of type IV collagenase, a matrix-degrading enzyme required for tumor cell invasion. appears to require intimate cooperation between tumor and stromal cells. The material contained in this volume highlights the state-of-the-art of knowledge of the molecular mechanisms by which epithelia and mesenchyme collaborate, and the abnormalities in these mechanisms that may lead to the development of cancer.

Molecular Modelling. Basic Principles and Applications. HD Holtje, G Folkers. VCH, Weinheim, 1996. Written by experts in the field of molecular modelling, this book describes the basics only to the extent necessary to permit reliable judgment of the results of molecular modelling calculations. Its main objective is to examine the various pitfalls that should be avoided. Without including unnecessary details, it leads the reader from simple calculations concerning small molecules to the modelling of proteins and other relevant biomolecules. This book constitutes an invaluable reference for all those dealing with molecular modelling in the course of their daily work.
