NEWS The company is also introducing a new range of Keltan EPDM grades that will be produced with high quality colourless paraffinic oil, instead of yellow paraffinic oil. The first of these new grades, Keltan 4551A, is currently under commercial approval at customers with development code DE 3072 and is expected to be commercially available from September 2008. Test results indicate that the product offers improved efficiency in peroxide curing and is suitable for a wide range of applications including low hardness profiles, hoses, seals and bellows. In addition, it offers new opportunities for coloured products and applications. This is seen as the beginning of a new era for the complete product range as the use of yellow paraffinic oil will be phased out over the next year. Among the benefits is an improvement in peroxide curing. With equivalent compound mixing and rheology, the new grade is able to offer improved peroxide cure efficiency and peroxide loading may be reduced by 30%. Contact: DSM Elastomers B.V. Momentive introduces clear LSR

M

omentive Performance Materials have introduced the LSR7000 a series of highly transparent liquid silicone rubbers (LSR). The materials offer typically 98% transparency combined with the processing and productivity advantages of an addition-cured, platinumcatalyzed LSR. These features potentially enable manufacturers to reduce manufacturing and assembly cycle times for complex parts. ‘By offering high transparency, high elasticity and easy processing, the LSR 7000 series may help designers and manufacturers to effectively address many of the toughest design challenges they face,’ said Yang Nuo, Pacific electronics marketing manager, Momentive. ‘This material is an excellent example of our strategic focus: we combine our close customer collaboration with our leading research and development capabilities, resulting in quick response to complex industrial needs.’ Recent innovation in optical systems, lightguide applications and mobile phones have increasingly seen liquid silicone rubbers replace materials such as transparent polycarbonate and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in new applications, due to the processing and productivity advantages of LSR. In China, Momentive has 4

cooperated with Sunrex, a leading input device manufacturer, to apply the LSR 7000 series to light guide film for commercial production. ‘By combining our proprietary technology with the super transparency of LSR7000, we have been able to successfully develop silicone light guide film for use in new mobile equipment,’ said Liu Dianshan, director of the Sunrex facility in Suzhou. ‘We are now cooperating on a long-term basis with Momentive to develop new, flexible applications for smart 3D light guide film.’ Contact: Momentive Performance Materials GmbH, D-51368 Leverkusen, Germany. This guide should contain a solution

T

he Henkel Solutions Guide has been updated and includes details of 170 products from the Loctite and Teroson ranges. The brochure also indicates how they can be used to solve a wide range of engineering problems. In addition to information relating to adhesives, threadlockers, retainers, sealants, lubricants, gasketing products, surface preparation materials and cleaners, there is information about the selection of dispensing equipment. A series of cutaway illustrations of components such as pumps, gearboxes and shafts show where the products can be used to overcome problems such as wear, corrosion and leaks. New, bigger MaxiFit solves OD mismatch problem

V

iking Johnson has extended its MaxiFit couplings range by adding a DN 700 size developed to solve a specific customer problem. The coupling was designed initially to overcome a difficulty encountered by Balfour Beatty during the cleaning and spray-lining of a 30 km section of United Utilities’ Hodder strategic trunk main. The cast iron main dates from the 1920s, is classified as 27” but in practice there proved to be considerable variation in OD, creating difficulty connecting make-up pieces at cut-out points. The 17 mm tolerance of MaxiFit was identified as the answer to the problem and the new DN700 size was introduced in time to meet the spray-lining schedule. The coupling is suitable for use with steel, ductile iron, PVCu, cast iron and asbestos cement pipe materials for a working pressure of 16 bar. uPont Performance Elastomers (DPE) has collaborated with Spansion Inc Fab 25 in Austin, Texas, to evaluate perfluoroelastomer O-rings designed to help increase the productivity of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. A recent problem occurred in the HDPCVD equipment at Fab 25 when process gases, SiH4, O2 and He, and cleaning chemistries, NF3 and O2 plasma-two stage, created an aggressive process environment.
