While consolidating its production facilities, Elf Atochem has also taken the opportunity to research the environmental impact of the flame retardants, under the voluntary industry commitment (VIC) scheme operated by the Organisation for Economic Cooperative Development (OECD). The results, says the company, are “very positive”. The absence of significant emissions from the sites of production and use, with very low bioaccumulation potential of the chemical, mean that the brominated retardants have a negligible effect on the environment. Monte11 will double polyolefin catalyst production Polypropylene manufacturer Monte11 is substantially increasing production capacity for catalysts and catalyst supports at its plant at Ferrara, Italy. The catalysts are used worldwide, both in its own plants and in licensees for its Spheripol polypropylene and Spherilene polyethylene processes. Capacity for fourth generation Ziegler-Natta catalysts has been increased to over 600 tonnes a year and a second stage, completing a 1400 tonne catalyst support line, will double capacity. The latest generation of catalysts represents the leading edge in performance in terms of activity, selectivity and ability to control polymer morphology and quality. New types produce some 50 kg of polypropylene per gram of catalyst - more than twice the level produced by earlier generations. Elementis rules out more acquisitions New acquisitions have been ruled out for this year by Elementis, while it integrates the Rheox rheological additives business, which it purchased late in 1997 (see Additives for Polymers, March, p, 4). Chief executive Bill Turcan says that the company will now concentrate on two divisions, colourants and additives, and chrome chemicals. The future of Akcros, the 50/50 PVC stabilizers joint venture with Akzo Nobel is under review. Elementis could buy out its partner, but equally could decide to sell its shareholding. Taking in a charge of 514 million from the strong Sterling exchange rate, the company reported a fall in operating profits, from 279.1 million to 252.4 million. With exceptional charges of 5191.8 million, mainly arising from disposal and restructuring, Elementis turned in a pre-tax loss of&l 12.5 million, against a profit of &120.8 million, on sales of 21.92 billion (g2.05 billion). A pretax profit of &81 million is forecast for the current business year.
