Mary Lovegrove qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer at St. George’s Hospital, Hyde Park Corner, London, in 1973. She held various clinical radiography posts in Central London until 1979 when she took up professional education. Her first teaching post was at the Middlesex Hospital, then she moved to King’s College Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, and finally to South Bank University. Currently she is Head of Division of Professions Allied to Medicine, Faculty of Health, South Bank University, London; Director of CeRPAM (Centre for Research in Professions Allied to Medicine) and Vice-President Europe and Africa ISRRT. As the third Vice President from England she follows in the footsteps of Kitty Clark and Marion Frank. Her professional interests include: screening programmes, skill mix, and defining the radiography profession at an international level.
Geoffrey Parkin is a Consultant Radiologist at The General Infirmary at Leeds and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Radiology at the University at Leeds. A graduate of the Leeds School of Medicine, he undertook his radiological training on the Leeds/ Bradford training scheme and was appointed Consultant Radiologist at St James’s University Hospital Leeds in 1973. In 1979 he moved to his present post at the General Infirmary at Leeds. Dr Parkin has throughout his career maintained a keen interest in radiographers’ education having been first a member, and from 1982 to 1992 Chairman, of the Leeds Western School of Radiography Training Committee. Currently he works closely with the Division of Imaging and Radiotherapy Sciences in the School of Health Care Studies at the University of Leeds. Although initially a gastrointestinal radiologist, Dr Parkin’s main area of work is now in breast imaging both in the symptomatic field and in the UK NHS Breast Screening Programme. For the last ten years his research efforts have been centred upon the application of digital imaging techniques to mammography. 1078-8174/99/010057+01
