r. Bernard I. Ghert, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mount Sinai Hospital, is pleased to announce that Mr. Theodore J. Freedman has been appointed a Vice-chairman and a Director of the Board. In this new position, Mr. Freedman will continue with his special external liaisons on behalf of Mount Sinai Hospital and provide advice and consultation. Mr. Freedman has been serving Mount Sinai Hospital for 30 years, most recently as Resident & CEO providing exemplary leadership. His achievements in the healthcare field are well known and

distinguished. In addition to his many roles in the academic field including Associate Professor in the Department of Health Administration, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, he is the current Chairman of Accrediting Commission on Education for Health Services Administration, the official accrediting body for masters’ degree health administration programs throughout North America. He continues to make many other contributions in such capacities as Chair of The Change Foundation of the Ontario Hospital Association, Interim Chair of the Ontario Health Research Alliance and as a Surveyor for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons. He is the Immediate Past Chair of the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Council, and Immediate Past Chair of the Ontario Council of Teaching Hospitals. Mr. Freedman served as Co-Chair of the Emergency Services Task Force of the Ontario Hospital Association/Ministry of Health, and President of the Society of Graduates, Department of Health Administration, Facblty of Medicine, University of Toronto. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and has won many awards from professional organizations for contributions to the field of health administration, including the Eugenie M. Stuart Award of Merit for demonstrated excellence for teaching. Mr. Ghert is also pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. JosephMapa to the position of President & Chief Executive Officer of Mount Sinai Hospital effective January 1, 2001.

Mr. Mapa joined the Hospital in 1977 as Administrative Resident, a prerequisite for the completion of his graduate studies in the Department of Health Administration, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Since his graduation he has progressed through roles of increasing responsibility, his most recent position being Executive Vice-president & Chief Operating Officer. He also holds an MBA from the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and has achieved Fellowships in both the Canadian College of Health Service Executives and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Mapa has co-authored three books on healthcare. He is Assistant Professor, Department of Health Administration, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, a Book Review Editor of Healthcare Management FORUM, and an elected representative for Ontario on the Board of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Ontario Regent’s Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives for distinguished leadership in the field of healthcare, and a recent Literary Award from the Society of Graduates in Health Administration, University of Toronto. In his new position, Mr. Mapa will apply his training, experience and vision to lead Mount Sinai Hospital. Mount Sinai Hospital, including its Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, is a dynamic and progressive healthcare institution affiliated with the University of Toronto.
