Steel sets record for Young's modulus SUMITOMO Metal Industries has produced a particle-reinforced steel with a Young's modulus of 265 to 285 GPa -- the highest yet achieved for steel. Advanced Materials and Processes ( M a t e r i a l s Park, Ohio, USA) reports that the steel's high level of stiffness is achieved through a three-stage production process. It begins with the mechanical alloying of oxides of iron, carbon and yttrium, which are comminuted to ultrafine particles in a ball mill. Following milling, the powder is sealed in a capsule and hot extruded. In the final step, the extruded material is heat t r e a t e d at t e m p e r a t u r e s of 1200 to 1400°C, enabling both primary and secondary recrystallization. The steel's composition is Fe- (13-16) Cr- (1-3)A1-0.5 (Y20 + Yb~O3). T e n s i l e y i e l d strength is reported as 600 to 900 MPa, u l t i m a t e t e n s i l e strength is 700 to 900 MPa and elongation 10-20%. Sumitomo produces the steel as bar, but says it can be fabricated into pipe and sheet. Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd; tel: 4 8 1 - 6 - 2 2 0 - 5 1 1 1 ; fax: + 81-6-223-0305.

Practice bullets m a d e with M I M PRACTICE bullets that disintegrate on contact with their target are being produced via metal injection moulding (MIM) by UK firm Royal Ordnance Specialty Metals (ROSM). The Wolverham ptonb a s e d firm p r o d u c e s t h e a m m u n i t i o n from a heavy alloy t h a t is almost pure t u n g s t e n . The bullets are pressed to near-net shape, before sintering to deliberately low strength values. Royal Ordnance Specialty Metals; tel: ~- 44-902783939; f a x : + 4 4 - 9 0 2 783352
