itÕs easy to cover it upÕ. BarrettÕs points are accepted. We agree that intervention may well be of greater value in younger cases, but also all new cases, although at what point needs clarifying. As to the length of time of attending hospital being a factor in needs assessment, we cannot be sure from this study. We did take two groups, the highest and lowest psychological distress scores, and looked at admissions over a five-year period. If anything the high distress group had fewer admissions although the numbers were too small for this to be statistically significant. It is also true that there is little point in identifying psychosocial problems in the absence of a referral network; there was little evidence of this in the areas where this study took place.
