Computer graphics programming, G Enderle, K Kansy and G Pfaff, Springer Verlag (I 984) 542 pp This is a member of Springer Verlag's Symbolic Computation series. It is subtitled GKS - The Graphic Standard, and covers graphics programming on the basis of that standard. It gives an overview of the concepts involved in GKS, the history of GKS design and the various system interfaces. A significant part of the book is devoted to a detailed description of the application of GKS functions in both Pascal and Fortran environments. Other areas covered include the process of generating a graphics standard and GKS-based system programming. The authors of the book were members of the editorial team that designed GKS up to version 4.8. There are 93 figures in the book, some of which are in colour.

The papers have been revised, taking into account both the referees' suggestions and discussions held at the workshop, for this publication. Many of the papers are Diana orientated probably because Diana was the earliest of the Ada tools interfaces to be standardized. These include papers that attempt to formally define Diana, those that describe variants on Diana and contributions on Diana in use. There is also a section of more general papers describing the planned validation of software tools interfaces and the use of tools interfaces in programming support environments.

It covers switching theory and the logical design of digital systems. It features topics such as modular design of combinatorial circuits, system level design using register transfer languages

and logical design using MSI and LSI components. It begins with gate level logic design, covers the concepts of combinatorial circuit design, sequential circuit design and system level design. It finishes by introducing the topic of the design of digital computer systems.

This book also looks at the problems of designing algorithms, programs, data flows and computer structures in an integrated way. It surveys the suggestions that have been made for future networks that combine many thousands of computers. It also describes several sequences of successively more general attempts to combine the power of arrays with the flexibility of networks. The author, in the preface, suggests that the book should be useful as a textbook for courses on computer architecture, parallel computers, arrays and networks and image processing and pattern recognition.

Computer-aided design of multivariable technological systems, (ed) G G Leininger, International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), Pergamon Press 700 pp This volume comprises the proceedings of the second I FAC Symposium on CAD, held in West Lafayette, IN, USA in September 1982. It contains 17 sessions, each of which is approximately five papers long. Eight sessions are devoted to theoretical issues of CAD. Five sessionsfocus on computer hardware and software issues in CAD. Four sessions deal with the practical applications issues of implementing CAD. Topics such as robotics, pole placement, regulator design, control theory and robust system design have entire sessions devoted to them. There are also papers from the plenary speakers, who address specific issues within the three major categories.

Introduction to computer mathematics Russell Merris, Computer Science Press (1985) 284 pp Topics in algebra, geometry, probability and statistics are combined with an introduction to the development of programming skills. There are exercises throughout the book to test comprehension of the concepts being ir.troduced. Some of the topics covered include interactive computation, probability and simulation, stati'itics, number bases, number theory, polynomials and geometry. The central theme of the book is the relationship between mathematics and the computer, using the computer as a tool. The programming language used is Basic.

For each company there is a listing of products and services, markets served and company background; there is also a breakdown of sales and existing installation data. There are charts of industry trends, market share, market penetration, price fluctuations and vendor and industry growth. Multimicroprocessor systems for real time appEcations, (eds) Gianni Conte and Dante del Corso, D Reidel Publishing Company (1985) 299 pp This book represents multiple processor architectures with shared memories, covering various aspects of the design methodologies of these systems including hardware, software and performance analysis. Particular attention is paid to the communication subsystem. At its lowest level this relies on hardware facilities like backplane buses. The design criteria for these structures are presented.
