MUTUAL INFLUENCE OF VOCAL TIME PATTERNS IN MOTHERINFANT INTERACTIONS. Michael Jasnow The investigation focused on the ways in which mothers and their 9-month-old infants organize the temporal pa tterning of dyadic vocal behavior. Twenty-nine dyads participated in semi-structured play. The mothers and infants were seated facing one another 2-1/2 feet apart. A hand-puppet was used to focus the in teraction and to facili ta te vocal exchange. stereo-audio recordings were made of each play episode and microanalysis of the recording s yielded five parameters: pauses, switching pauses, vocaliza tions, speaker turns, and simul taneous speech. Time series regression was emmployed to evaluate interspeaker influence. The parameters were averaged per minute, which was the unit of analysis. The resul t:s indica te tha t the mothers' swi tchingpause durations were influenced by infants' swi tching-pause dura tions emi tted in the previous minute. The infants' switching-pause durations, however, were influenced by the mothers' swi tchingpause durations emitted in the concurrent minute. In addition, the pause, switching-pause, and vocalization frequencies of the mothers and infants exhibited mutual influence. The mother-infant dyads also engaged in al terna ting vocaliza tions signif ican tly more of ten than Ln simul taneous vocaliza tions. Moreover, the gender of the infan ts significantly affected their vocal behavior.
