MYCOLOGICAL SOCIETIES OF THE WORLD MYCOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA A few mycologists from India, who attended the 1st International Mycological Congress, Exeter, met on 12th September 1971 to discuss the need for a general forum for mycologists in India and decided to form a society. The resolution was passed 'to form a Mycological Society of India with the broad objective of promoting the development of Mycology in India in all its aspects and in the widest perspective. Prof C V Subramanian (CAS in Botany, University of Madras) was nominated as convenor of a steering committee to be responsible for the function ing of the Society until the election of the first office bearers. The Society was formally inaugurated and the first general meeting was held on the 1st January 1973 at the University of Madras, during the First International Symposium on Taxonomy of Fungi. Forty-five mycologists from India attended the meeting along with some delegates from other countries who attended the symposium. Prof M J Thirumalacher was elected as the first President. The main objective of the Society was to create a journal devoted to mycology in all its aspects, and this resulted in the production of Kavaka, with Prof C V Subramanian as Chief Editor. 'Kavaka' is the Sanscrit word for fungus. Fourteen volumes of the journal (one number each year up to volume 12, and two numbers from volume 13) have so far been published. The other main activity of the Society comprises the Annual Meeting at the end of each year, usually held at a different centre, such as universities and research institutes, in India. During the Annual Meeting, there is a Presidential Address, the Election of new office bearers, together with symposia and seminars on different aspects of mycology. From 1981, an annual Shome Memorial Lecture on a mycological topic is also I V SUB delivered by a disting- . .. uished mycologist, at the IADIA UN\ invitation of the Council of the Society. The Society is affiliated to the International Mycological Association.
