LTC Associations Collaborate on AIDS Traineeship The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) Research and Education Foundation--in cooperation with the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA), NADONA-LTC, American Health Care Association (AHCA), American Association of Homes for the Aging (AAHA), and American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA)--will develop a multidisciplinary AIDS traineeship in longterm care. The purpose of the traineeship is to provide three key health care disciplines within nursing facilities-medical directors, consultant pharmacists, and directors of nursing-with the background, information,

and tools necessary to prepare a facility and its staff, residents, families, and community for the acceptance of H I V / A I D S patients. The AIDS traineeship in long-term care will be unique in its experiential and multidisciplinary focus. The increasing number of persons with AIDS and those infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has placed a great strain on the nation's health care system. Although no cure has been discovered for this fatal disease, the development of medicines for HIV/AIDSassociated infections and complications enable persons with H I V / AIDS to live longer. As a result, more people with H I V / A I D S are seeking long-term care and nursing facilities will participate in the continuum of care for HIV/AIDS patients. The ASCP Foundation's AIDS traineeship in long-term care will begin to meet the needs of the rapidly growing number of HIV/AIDS patients who require long-term care by increasing the number of qualified nursing facilities to care for these patients. Only when more nursing facilities begin admitting HIV/AIDS patients will a reasonable choice of care sites become available.

The AIDS traineeship will be conducted at a competitively selected facility currently caring for AIDS patients and will encompass didactic programs, experiential training, and provision of resource materials.

NADONA Official Meets with ANA W A S H I N G T O N - - J o a n Warden met recently with officials from the American Nurses Association to discuss common goals and explore areas of mutual concern. The interests of these two organizations in matters of client support in long-term care are mutual and reflect the growing concern of the care of the elderly.

NADONA Member Wins Lawsuit SALT L A K E CITY, U T A H - - A federal court jury made a $1 million award to Joanna Nolan, RN, DON, after finding that she was fired improperly from her job at the Holladay Health Care Center, a nursing home owned by Hillhaven Corp., because managers believed rumors started by coworkers. Nolan stated (according to The S a l t L a k e T r i b u n e ) t h a t , even

though it was an u n u s u a l l y large amount of money to be awarded in a defamation case, " M o n e y wasn't an issue at all" and that the restoration of her good name was much more important to her than the money. Nolan was fired in 1989 after returning from a month-long leave of absence to visit her ailing mother in Ireland. Nolan said there had been no rumors before she left but that, in the interim, new managers took over

and they never checked the rumors with previous managers or with her. " H i l l h a v e n did nothing to bring me in and find out what happened," Nolan told the Tribune. A registered alien who came to America in 1974 with her son, Nolan said that after her discharge she considered moving to a place where no one knows her but that she decided to stay and fight. According to fellow DONs, she was an excellent director of nursing.

Turnover of directors of nursing in the United States is a growing cause for concern because the Professional director of nursing in long-term care is a principal in the delivery of quality care. The directors of nursing of the Utah Chapter of N A D O N A received c o m m e n d a t i o n f r o m N A D O N A for their support and encouragement of Nolan throughout her ordeal.
