use primarily in demanding high-temperature applications where black colour and the absence of chromium are required. The FDA approval covers the intended use in all polymers, including those used in high-temperature cookware, at a maximum loading of 5% by weight. It also meets numerous other regulations such as AP 89.1, AS 2070, EN 71.3, BfR, CONEG, RoHS, WEEE, ELV, TCLP and the Sony List. According to the company, Black 20F944 has exceptional hiding power and opacity, and excellent tinting strength. It is a strong absorber of UV radiation but is not degraded by UV and therefore resistance to weather and light are good, Shepherd Color reports. With its high heat stability (>600°C or 1100°F) it can be used in a variety of applications where colour durability is required such as plastic cookware, frying pan and oven coatings, barbeque grills, automotive applications such as muffler/exhaust coatings, and ceramics. Black 20F944 is insoluble in virtually all solvents and resins and will not bleed or migrate. It has good lightfastness, particularly in full tone, Shepherd Color says. use of nanoclays in polyolefins and creates the opportunity to use nanoclay additives in food packaging applications. It also provides potential cost savings to customers, adds Lan. The development will help the company maintain its ‘leadership position’ in nanoclay processing and application technologies, Nanocor says. Each nanoMax grade contains 50 wt% of Nanomer nanoclay. Letdown levels are commonly in the range of 8–12 wt% nanoMax for mechanical improvement, and 2–8 wt% for flame retardation. The products are claimed to be very effective in flame retardation when combined with traditional flame retardants. Stratek-Plastics has successfully developed processing equipment to utilize elongation-flow to facilitate particle dispersion in various polymer matrices. The mixing process is called Tek-Mix, and the equipment is being commercially manufactured by Xaloy Inc under the tradename nXmix. Nanoclays and carbon nanotubes are among the particles successfully tested. According to Alan Stall, CEO of Stratek, the nXmix is a simple add-on device to any extruder, single or twin screw, to improve compounding or for direct extrusion product improvement. anoclay specialist Nanocor has introduced a new nanoMax® product line for polyolefin resins. These new nanoMax formulations do not contain any compatibilizers, such as PE-g-MA or PP-g-MA. The masterbatch products were developed using the elongational flow processing technology developed by Stratek-Plastics LLC of Wallingford, CT, USA. The nanoMax masterbatch line was introduced in 2006 to provide easy processing to incorporate the company’s Nanomer® nanoclays into polyolefin resins. These products have been used in flame retardation and to improve the mechanical performance properties of engineering plastics. The original formulations contain PE-g-MA or PP-g-MA as a compatibilizer to disperse the nanoclay. While nanoMax products enabled customers to ‘speed up the pace of product development’, according to Nanocor’s general manager Dr Tie Lan, eliminating the compatibilizer is a ‘significant technical advance’ for the
