A N A R R O W symmetric E P R signal has been discovered in magnesium, zinc, cadmium and mercury containing bis-8-hydroxyquinolylmethane and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone coordination polymers. The signal has a width of 8 ± 2 oersteds and the g-factor equals 2.00. The intensity of the signal depends upon the d e g ~ e of polymerization of the specimens. A PHOTOELECTRIC instrt~nent has been (lescribed for light scattering measurements of polymer solutions at temperatures from 15 to 60 °. Signals from a photomultiplier are transm i t t e d to the measuring amplifier 28-IM. The weight average molecular weights of polystyrene and a number of fractions of polyallylbenzene, poly-4-phenylbutene-1 and poly-5phenylpentene-1 have been determined a n d the limits of applicability of the instrument for determining molecular weights of polymers have been indicated. ULTRATttIN sections of thermally treated oriented polycapramide monofibres have been investigated electron microscopically. Various supermolecular formations have been found in the microfibres, the elementary unit being apparently a thin microfibril (ca. 100/~ wide and several microns long). Low angle X - r a y studies showed the existence of a large period in the polycapramide monofibres ( d ~ 8 3 / ~ ) which on stretching becomes oriented along the slretch direction. Heat treatment of the monofibres near the melting temperature increases the large period (up to d ~ 9 6 / ~ ) . The presence of the large period has been proposed to be due to a pleated conformation of chains. FRACTIONATION OF THE VINYLPHENYL ETHER-ACROLEIN COPOLYMERIZATION PRODUCT

i VINYLPHENYL ether-acrolein copolymerization product obtained in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate was subjected to fractionation. Five fractions were isolated by fractional precipitation from acetone solution. The properties of the fractions, molecular weight, viscosity of 1 ~o acetone solutions an4 the UV absorption spectra were investigated. The monomers ~vere shown to copolymerize in ahnost equimolar proportions. The integral and differential molecular weight distribution curves have been presented. Staudinger's constant K ~ 4 . 2 × 10 -a, 4.4 × 10 -~ has been determined from the relation between specific viscosity and molecular weight. The I R spectrum of the copolymer is given.
