Nature in Norfolk: A Heritage in Trust. By Norfolk Naturalists Trust Ltd. Jarrold, Norwich, 1976. 192 pp., 24.5 x 19.5 cm. Price: £3.50. Fifty years ago a small group of enlightened and far-sighted naturalists formed the Norfolk Naturalists Trust with the object of acquiring and managing nature reserves. They were the first of the 40 County Naturalists' Trusts which now cover the whole of England, Wales and Scotland. Between them, these Trusts now own or manage over 900 reserves comprising over 34,000 ha with a membership in excess of 100,000. This excellently produced book, copiously illustrated with high quality coloured and black-and-white photographs, and numerous clear, well-drawn maps and diagrams, is published to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Norfolk Trust. In 192 pages it provides a lucid, highly readable account of the major habitats in the county and looks at the ways in which man is affecting and exploiting them. The book is divided into three sections: the region and its characteristics, the habitats, and man's impact, through farming and forestry. The contributors, mostly professional ecologists, foresters, agriculturalists and soil scientists, many of whom have worked in Norfolk for a decade or more, provide a succinct and highly informative account of the county which has yet to be bettered. Unlike so many symposium volumes produced by learned societies, this book is totally integrated and reads as if written by one person. It is a model of how a regional study should be done and presented and will be of interest to all who have an interest in ecology, conservation and the making of the landscape. T. C. E. WELLS
