The second edition of this book presents for practitioners contemporary complementary and alternative medical approaches and therapies, as well as providing the historical context within which most of these “contemporary” approaches are based. As stated multiple times throughout the text, the majority of these therapies are not in fact contemporary, but hundreds or thousands of years old. A most interesting aspect of the discussion of many of the alternative medical therapies and medicines in the book is an inclusion of references to scientific evidence (or lack thereof, in some cases) for the use of such approaches. The foreword and opening chapter provide some definitions of alternative and complementary medicine for the medical provider, a useful guide, because these words are often used in a very different context by different types of practitioners and in different areas of the United States and the world. The book is divided into four sections. The first section, “Basis and Context of Complementary and Alternative Medicine,” gives an overview of the history and development of these therapies and puts it into a global/ cultural context. The second section, “Alternative Medical Therapies,” reviews homeopathy, manual therapies such as osteopathy and chiropractic, and naturopathic medicine. In a chapter on herbalism, a nice appendix lists the top twenty herbs used in medical care (or by patients without medical direction). Each herb is followed by a brief description of natural habitat, herb properties, how to prepare the herb for use, what illnesses the herb is proported to treat, and possible side effects. Also quite helpful and interesting in this section of the book is a comparison of the “hands-on” medical techniques, detailing both philosophical differences and differences in manipulation between osteopathy and chiropractic. The inclusion of brief histories of the founders of the various “opathies” was also fascinating and gave the reader a better understanding of the period of US history out of which each of these forms of medicine grew. The third section of the book, “Complementary Medical Approaches,” reviews mind-body interventions such as the placebo effect, psychotherapy, meditation, relaxation therapy and biofeedback. Many of the subjects in this chapter will be more familiar to the practitioner, as these techniques are more widely utilized in “mainstream” medicine today. Therapeutic touch, Reiki, energy-based therapies, humor therapy, and creative arts therapies are also discussed. The book’s fourth section, “Traditional Medical Systems,” reviews Chinese medicine, Traditional and Maharishi Ayurveda, the Islamic

Dr. Frank Netter is a legend in his time—an incredibly gifted individual who has consistently shared his time and talent with the healthcare profession. In previous years Dr. Netter provided the CIBA (Ciba Geigy Corp) series of medical illustrations, a collection of images widely utilized and applicable to virtually all specialties. Most astutely, Dr. Roger Smith has compiled an outstanding and practical book focusing on women’s health that is effectively organized into gynecological and obstretrical segments with sections including: vulvar disease, vaginal disease, cervical and uterine pathology, and OB conditions. The remainder of the book addresses adnexal disease, breast conditions, genetic and endocrinological disease, and a primary-care-focused discussion of women’s health. As predicted, the Netter illustrations are well detailed and highly instructive, concentrating on both medical and surgical techniques. Each medical condition is organized into Etiology and Pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, diagnostic approach, management, therapy, and follow-up. All of this is followed by a final section that includes ICD-9 codes. The book serves as a ready diagrammatic for discussions with patients in the office setting as well as a wellorganized and succinct review of the major medical and surgical problems encountered in our specialty. Those with interest in Adolescent Gynecology stand to benefit from sections including amenorrhea, gonadal dysgenesis, polycystic ovarian disease, Turner’s syndrome, and vaginal agenesis among many others. In summary, we would highly suggest the $55.00 purchase of Netter’s Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health, an investment that will pay big dividends. doi:10.1016/S1083-3188(03)00129-3
