PEKTE. By Rudolf Klöti. Basel, S. Karger AG, 1965. Paperbound, 146 pages, 81 figures in black and white, 55 tables, bibliography, index. Price: s F r . / D M 3 3 . - . The experiences with retinal detachment surgery at the Zürich Clinic reported in this monograph are interesting for several reasons, one of which is that Klöti is the ophthalmologic descendent of Gonin who preceded him at the same clinic. The comparison of the results of retinal detachment operations in the period 1951-53 and 1961-63 is informative and parallels the experiences of others. T h e important contribution which Klöti has made is the use of the patient's own fascia lata to replace synthetics, such as polyethylene or silicone, in buckling, circling and trap-door procedures. H e presents convincing arguments in support of this procedure and his results are comparable to those which other authors report. The use of a silver spatulalike instrument placed temporarily in such fashion as to indent the posterior pole was successful in one case in which a macular hole was present. Klöti, himself, expressed astonishment at

the fact that no retinal dehiscence was found in 17.5% of the 1961-63 series. This book is recommended for anyone interested in the problem of retinal detachment. T h e material has been carefully analyzed but the statistics presented in tabular form are confusing. T h e illustrations, all in black and white, are well chosen and clear. There is a good bibliography. Daniel Snydacker C O M P L I C A T I O N S AFTER CATARACT SLIRGERY.

Edited by Frederick H . Theodore, M . D . Boston, Little, Brown, and Company, 1965. Clothbound, 672 pages, 112 figures in black and white, 43 tables, chapter references, index. Price : $16.00. T h e editor has done an excellent job in bringing together 31 contributors without more than a little overlapping and duplication. The subject is covered well, including complications during and after surgery, all types of infection and other complications. The chapters on infection and its prevention, mostly by Theodore, are particularly recommended to every cataract surgeon. T h e material is up to date and includes cryosurgical techniques for dislocated lenses by Rizzuti and by Kelman. A chapter on optical complications of aphakia by Linksz is delightful. T h e book is recommended to every ophthalmologist and should be required reading for every eye resident. H. Saul Sugar
