The discipline of neuroendocrinology is rather young, however, evolving very fast. Until now, no comprehensive text book was available. The present volume was designed to cover this major void in the discipline and by doing so, taking the risk of ageing fast. This book is intended for undergraduate students as well as for beginning graduate students, fellows, residents and clinicians. The chapters are written by an outstanding group of scientists also known as skilled teachers. The text is classified in six sections involving: interactions between the nervous and endocrine systems, the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction, parturition, lactation, growth, development, metabolism, and fluid balance, the neuroendocrine correlates of stress, behaviour, and biological processes, neuroendocrine regulation of biological rhythms, neuroendocrine pathology and disease, and emerging areas of neuroendocrinology. The editors have succeeded in collecting an array of famous authors and experts in their fields which guaranteed an excellent edition. The book is easily accessible and attractive to physicians, because the accent is put on physiological and pathophysiological processes and complex molecular biochemical and genetic developments are avoided. This strength involves also a disadvantage. Identification of mutations in genes responsible for heterogeneous diseases such as obesity and pituitary tumours may provide new insights in pathological
mechanisms. In this way, molecular biology, genetics and pathophysiology form an integral and indistinguishable entity to understand development of disease. As a consequence, for intance the chapter on diagnosis and treatment of hypothalamic and pituitary diseases is rather short and missing these fundamental aspects of hereditary and sporadic diseases. Nevertheless, this book gives a superb overview of the actual knowledge in the field. As a book of reference it is indispensable for colleagues active or interested in neuroendocrinology. Especially medical biologists and endocrinologists will find a lot of subjects to their taste. For them it will appear to be a ‘classic’ text and continue to be cherished as a reference book in their private libraries. C.J.M.
