Neurologic Manifestations of Rheumatic Diseases

Foreword N e u r o l o g i c M a n i f e s t a t i o n s of Rheumatic Diseases

Michael H. Weisman, MD Consulting Editor

As Sarah Goglin and John Imboden point out, neurologic manifestations of rheumatic diseases often represent sources of confusion and quandary resulting in delay of diagnosis and institution of management. The purpose of this issue is to clarify as much as possible the latest advances in our understanding of these challenges and to place them in a format that is user-friendly for the rheumatologist. Sarah and John have done a truly remarkable job here. All our inflammatory rheumatic diseases have neurologic manifestations, and from a historical perspective, these manifestations may have dominated the clinical picture in years past (such as in rheumatoid arthritis and lupus) but are seen less commonly today. This issue provides a unique challenge for our trainees, who may not have a chance to see, during their fellowship training, some of these patients. That is why the approach by Sarah and John is so important because an issue of this nature with its perspective from these excellent clinicians can embolden a young clinician to face these challenges.
