NEVADA

CNMs practice in Nevada under a 1973 Nurse Practice Act, which authorizes regulations for nurse practitioners as a generic group. Nursemidwifery is not mentioned specifically in either the statute or the regulations. A nurse practitioner is defined as a “registered professional nurse who has specialized skill, knowledge and experience who is authorized to perform designated medical acts in collaboration with and under the supervision of a licensed physician(s).” The regulations require that the nurse practitioner applicant have a signed written agreement with a physician that delineates protocols, a description of duties, regular consultations, and an emergency service plan. A supervising physician may not employ more than two nurse practitioners at one time, except for public health physicians. Nurse practitioners may apply to the State Board of Nursing for prescription privileges at the same time they apply for certification. Once approved by the Board of Nursing, the nurse practitioner applies to the State Board of Pharmacy for registration. The State Board of Pharmacy is authorized to adopt rules regarding the specific type and amount of drugs a nurse practitioner can use

depending on the specialty area of practice; the experience and training of the applicant; the population being served; and the distances between areas of practice and the nearest hospitals and physicians. Other midwives have no legal authority to practice in Nevada; however, state sources report that a bill to recognize lay-midwifery under the State Division of Health has been proposed.
