After t h e gel is f o r m e d , a s l i g h t v a c u u m is a p p l i e d to t h e u n c o a t e d s i d e of t h e p o r o u s m e t a l s h e e t ; t h i s p u l l s t h e v i s c o u s gel further into the metal pore mouths, improving adhesion of t h e f i n a l c o a t i n g . T h e n t h e gel is a i r - d r i e d for m a n y h o u r s b e f o r e b e i n g h e a t e d i n a n oven. T h e r a t e of i n c r e a s e of t h e o v e n t e m p e r a t u r e is a b o u t 1 0 ° C / h r to a m a x i m u m t e m p e r a t u r e of 400°C.

New alumina membrane T h i s is a n o t h e r v a r i a t i o n o n a n inorganic sol-gel membrane theme: here, an aluminium a l k o x l d e is p a r t l y h y d r o l y z e d b y s t e a m in t h e p r e s e n c e of a n a c i d p e p t i z i n g a g e n t s u c h a s nitric, o x a l i c or s u l p h u r i c a c i d a n d a n organic solvent such as isopropanol. T h e p r o d u c t of t h i s p r o c e s s is a n a l u m i n a sol w h i c h c o n t a i n s -Al-O- r e p e a t i n g u n i t s a n d retains some alkoxide groups. T h e sol is t h e n d e p o s i t e d o n a porous support and dried and g r a d u a l l y h e a t e d in a conventional calcination sequence. The membrane properties are s u i t a b l e for s e p a r a t i n g hydrogen/carbon dioxide mixtures at high temperatures a n d w i t h g o o d selectivity. The manufacturing process does not u s e w a t e r a s a c a r r i e r or r e a c t i o n medium, so effluent processing considerations are reduced c o m p a r e d to m a n y o t h e r s o l - g e l p r o c e s s e s , it i s c l a i m e d .
