Montedison UK limited. A new general booklet on the unique ‘Fomblin’ range of perfluorinated polyether products. These are a range of high performance, non-flammable oils and greases. Their principal applications are in the following industries: Nuclear, Vacuum, Aerospace, Military, Electronic/ Electrical, plastics lubrication, porous metal bearings, oxygen service, high temperature and hostile environment lubrication chemical industry, solvent service and magnetic media lubrication. The ‘Fomblin’ range offers high lubricating power, absence of hydrogen/hydrocarbons, long life and extreme temperature resistance for use in conditions where conventional lubricants fail rapidly. ‘Fomblin’ is a registered trademark of the Montedison Group of Italy. Enquiries about possible applications will be welcomed. Montedison UK Ltd. 7/8 Lygon Place, Ebury Street, London SWlW OJR, UK

When a catologue becomes a work of reference. Sometimes a company produces a catologue of its range of products in such a comprehensive manner that it might be classed more as a work of reference than just a promotional aid. In the field of power transmission up to 3.75 kW (5 hp) the catalogue just published jointly by Normand Electrical Co Ltd and Neco Electronics (Europe) Ltd of Cosham, Hants, seems likely to fall into such a category. Comprising some 212 pages, its 21 sections span ac and dc motors, geared motor units, speed controllers, Ward Leonard sets, speed reducers, electromagnetic brakes, tachometer generators and a number of special-purpose drives. More significant for the specifying engineer or designer is the comprehensiveness of the content. Typically, each section gives product specifications, performance curves, installation and maintenance instructions, connection diagrams, dimensions and, where appropriate, easy-to-follow selection charts, mounting arrangements and weights. There is a separate section devoted to such general information as users like to have readily to hand : conversion tables, mounting designations, lubrication charts and application check lists. In the foreword to the catologue Neco state that the publication has been developing since the company pioneered the integral geared motor unit in the 1920s. The catologue is therefore a present-day ‘distillation’ of this long experience in combining a vast number of electrical and mechanical variants to meet 66

The revisions for the third edition are of two kinds. First, there are additional pages of new data giving molar values of the internal energy, enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs function of some gases and vapours. These data should be useful if four-year courses become common, making it possible to treat mixtures and chemical reactions more comprehensively.

Surface Science Letters, March 1980, reproduced from Surface Science, Vol 93, No 1. (The publishers, North-Holland Publishing Co of 335 Jan van Galenstraat, PO Box 211, 1 OOOAE Amsterdam, The Netherlands, plan to market Surface Science Letters twice monthly with 24 issues scheduled for 1980).

The second type of change is concerned with the more rigorous attitude now taken to the concept of a physical quantity and its unit, and to the new definition of the mole consolidated internationally in 1971. The quotient of a symbol and its unit appears at the head of columns so that the values can properly be regarded as pure numbers; and the quantity ‘molar mass’ (unit: kg/kmol) is used instead of the dimensionless quantity ‘relative molecular mass’.
